r1george
Still got the drone in the car even after changing both rear wheel bearings, no oil deposits around diff so probably no lack of oil. 94 TT Auto any ideas?? Has anyone else tried tracking down droning noises, I could end up changing the whole transmission to find the problem and then find out it was a tyre Any help appreciated. Scooter
and then find out it was a tyre this may not be far off............i'm sure Muffleman had a bad drone that turned out to be the tyres....... What rear tyres do you have, depending on your wheels it may be possible to swap your fronts and rears temporarily (obviously only worth it if they are different brands!) to see if it makes a difference......... r1george
The tyres are Toyo Proxies and been on for about 18months. Loads of meat left on them and worn evenly but could there noise charateristics change due to wear/age. Also does anyone thing it could be the front wheel bearings?? or maybe front discs as I changed them 6 months ago for the grooved type?? (I didn't notice a drone immediately after changing discs) Does the prop have bearing/s??
Chris Wilson
Could be propshaft centre bearing. Has it had an aftermarket LSD fitted? Try borrowing someone elses wheels and tyres? Turn the radio up and forget about it until it becomes more obvious what it is?

Would the prop need removing to check or would it be obvious from under the car?? My brothers got a 300ZX so could try his rear wheels (weekend job I think). Turning the radio sounds like a plan

Angarak
I have the 'knackered wheel bearing' drone on my car, it increases/decreases with speed, and is more noticeable on certain road surfaces. I've checked the wheel bearings and they're all fine, no play whatsoever. Checked the Diff oil and thats fine, and as far as I know its a standard Torsen LSD. I reckon its my Jap tyres (Bridgestone Potenza RE-01's) that are making the noise.

Turning the radio sounds like a plan You'll need to remove the prop, 15 minutes on a ramp maximum.
r1george
Not looked yet but is the prop a 2 piece, if the centre bearing has gone can it be replaced in my garage or is it a recon prop needed???
