Vanishing MPG

The aircon effect on MPG debate is interesting. I had always been warned that using aircon meant that you got far less MPG. I know people who avoid using the aircon because they think it will cost too much! My sister and I have identical 4WDs (while I'm waiting for my Supra!) and she gets far less MPG than me. We have very similar driving styles/habits/journeys. The only difference is that she usually drives with a window open, and I use aircon and never open a window while driving.

IMHO and experience, the drag from open windows far outweighs the cost of running aircon - in a 4WD anyway.:)

Maybe I can convince her to buy a Supra, and we can compare MPG in them?:p

Air con on high, under inflated tyres, driving with windows down and high rolling resistance tyres can all have a significant affect.

Silly question but have you changed the airfilter lately and checked there is no restrictions in the inlet. I had a lump of newspaper jammed in the bumper opening close to one of the air intakes which could only be seen from underneath...

Cheers

I had the airbox cover off two weeks ago when I had the headlights out to fit my new indicators. The filter element was OK.

If it is the AC then I'm quite surprised at the amount of difference it has made even though I suppose I shoud know better.

Wow, that's some kind of super thread revival!!!!

For those that are interested (not many)...

Economy tyres make about 4% difference over std tyres.. its the silica content. Continental eco contact are the best, as I found out during emissions homologation testing at F**d.

Air con is cyclic, and will switch in and out to control to the temperature setpoint according to the ambient temp. As Ian says, the hotter it is, the harder it works & the more power it uses. On average its about a 15% reduction in fuel consumption. Got in a right pickle once doing emissions & economy testing on a Mondeo, their climate control system doesn't switch off... ever! Lots of wires pulled out sorted it ;)
