My work cost me 2800 in total including all glass out, trim off, paint, etc & some dents fixed. For information, here is what I bought: 3 litres Brandywine Urethane Kandy @ 23.94/l 1 litre catalyst @ 32.14/l 1 litre fast reducer @ 10.71/l 6 half pints Brandywine Kandy concentrate (to mix with laquer for c/f panels) @ 21.20/half pint total = £284.20 There are so many different things you can do with candys, I'm sure you will find something suitably stunning. Tricky-Ricky Posted March 22, 2007 Share Posted March 22, 2007 Have to say your body shop is taking the pea! i presume it just involves sorting out a few pressure dents etc and changing the colour? not fitting a full body kit as well, and the price would be dear even so, are there just a couple of body shops over there? so they have you over a barrel so to speak, i am used to buying and using paint and there is no way materials are going to come to a third of that even if you used chromaflair paint at £200 per lt, you actually don't need much of that and it is very forgiving to apply, as said before candy is a tint over a base coat, and the depth and and colour depend on the coats applied, but it is difficult to get right, but not that expensive. original_amo Posted March 22, 2007 Share Posted March 22, 2007 to be honest dont skimp on paint as cheep paint dulls and fades, house of kolor do really good paint but it is'nt cheep. also candy paint is very very hard to paint as it can take hours and loads n loads of coats due to the paint being thin. and make sure the silver base coat is very corse. As has been said you need good light/sunshine for candy to show fully, but no other painting process can match it's depth when the sun's out. Sarnia Hey Sernia, I see there's allot of feedback about these candy's, I have been doing body repair for over 12 years and have done loads of candy's and effects paints on cars and bikes, the candy red u are talking about in these pictures posted is a 4 stage system. When the car is ready to actually paint the first stage is to base up the whole car in black probably 2.litres (Black covers well) Second stage when the black has dried, is to apply a very coarse/metallic silver, its this which gives u your depth and candy effect when its in the sun! (3.litres) Thirdly after the silver is dry, u actually start with the candy red, this paint is very transparent which is why its a candy and this is why its hard to paint....u need to apply even coats at the same time and I would say probably 4 coats, if u are heavy in places it will look almost dark black and if u are thin in places it almost looks white/silver, and this in the sun looks a right mess! (5/6litres dependant on how far u go with the respray) Last but not least when everything is almost dry u apply the lacquer which if u use a good HS (High Solid) lacquer will take 2 coats, this then seals in and protects your nice candy red, it will not fade in the sun, and it does pay to get a good HS lacquer as over time cheaper products tend to sink and go dull, don't hold there gloss value basically. Also believe me there are loads of candy reds as in hundreds to choose from, House of Colour & Dupont do about 50 alone to choose from that I know off! One very good point I will make is even if u do get your paint from somewhere else and for cheaper, if your body shop has never done candy and by the sound of thing's from what you have said so far, defiantly haven't......... its going to be a waste of your money and time, candy is hard to do and even the best painters can foooke it up easy for the first time. Cost wise the main thing is time/labour with candy's as they do take ages to paint.(Dry) Heres what I would charge for the materials: 3 Litres of normal black base.....................................£45 3 Litres of Silver Undercoat(Sherwin Williams)..............£150 6 Litres of cherry red candy(Dupont Specialist range)....£480 5 Litres of lacquer (Sherwin Williams HS Topline)............£120 Total.......£795 These are estimated and could be slightly less/more but a good guidline to work from;) cheers and goodluck, M. Thanks ever so much for all of your information, you have been really brilliant and obviously know your stuff! Thank you Matthew for such a detailed reply, I appreciate your taking the time to write it. Reading through your comments, I think that I might be better off sticking with the black, the difference in cost is still considerable and what really worries me is the possibility of the car getting scratched. I had my car suffer minor vandalism where I live at the moment and the thought of having to respray all over again... it's taken me nearly 4 years to get to the point where I can get the car sprayed now. Also, a lot of you are saying that it is very hard to spray this paint. I am not aware of any cars at all over here with Candy paint so have to assume that this place has never used this type of paint before. This time the head is going to have to rule the heart. But I hope that this thread can help someone else, I really do because looking at all of the pictures you have posted, they are just amazing! I will post some before and after pictures of my car once it has been done (and you can feel free to say how good it looks in black!! ). Thanks again to everyone, I think you have all saved me from making what may have been an expensive mistake. Take care and have a great weekend! Budget is a big issue when it comes to respraying a car as a bad job will be really noticeable whereas a good job, even in a plain colour makes a car stand out. Have you considered using a flake paint job? You can get some really cool flakes nowadays (basically just very fine glitter) that you add into a standard paint or laquer. My mate's been doing some bikes recently with these and you only need a small quantity for a really impressive sparkle. I am attaching some before pictures, the after's should come along next week. It's a bit dirty so looks a bit worse than it is (just back from a track day in France - in the snow!!). I'm going to the paint place tomorrow as they have some samples they have sprayed up of reds with flakes. It's that or black, I suspect the latter though.
