Hi guys, My fiance has been wanting to be an ambulance paramedic for ages now but we dont know anyone too find out the best way forward for her. We'v found out that you have to have a D1 category on your licence before you can even apply, we rang up a couple places and the average cost of that is £1500 big ones :( but its what she really wants to do. Anyway, any help would be appriciated. Cheers guys.

I think the ambulance service will do the driver training as part of the course.

Look up your local ambulance service online and check out their application process.

I work with paramedics regularly so can find out info... but probably only relating to Sussex.

From the guy she works with:

Hi Chris,

Each service differs slightly as to their specific joining requirements, and the D1 Classification is required on certain licences if your licence was acquired after a certain date, which I cannot immediately recall, however I did not need it. Its all to do with the overall weight of the vehicle & age of the driver.

However this link http://www.how2become.co.uk/paramedic.htm?keyword=|googleparamedic|paramedic How to become a UK Paramedic ( CD ROM ) contains over 140 pages of everything you need to know, from how to fill out the application form, details of the job, academic requirements, fitness test, training course, interview questions, etc. for 9.99 its a great insight into the job and contains everything a potential candidate needs.

I hope you find the information of use, please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of further assistance.

Thanks guys, we checked online and it gives you a bit of info but it doesnt give you much detail at all on where to start or how to get in. We know she cant just jump in as a paramedic, she will have to start somewhere, ambulance technician or care assistant, something along those lines but where would be the best place to start? If you could be so kind and find out if they do put you through driver training that would be a big help, cheers guys. We have sent e-mails asking these questions but we have never had a reply :( Thanks again

Is this D1 cat really that expensive? It is for mini buses only  I had my training with my company, but had to sign devil's contract for 2 years *sigh* They gave me full cat D training including final exam etc. If your lady fancy to drive buses for 1 year and then resign from job and pay 1k penalty in small rates - she can try this :p

LOL, we rang a couple places up that do this sort of driver training C1 is for mini buses so they say and D1 is for larger vehicles (over 16 seater I think) but cant remember exactly (the other half rang and then told me while I was busy, I just woke up when she told me the average cost was £1500. She may pass quicker and it may cost less but I think thats about the price you pay. Rubbish if you do pay all that and you cant get in for years I thought, but never mind

Thanks again Chris. Iv just ordered that package from the web site :) its only £10 and may be very usefull. Thanks again
