You're right, nothing we can do...just the shock of seeing the "deductions" field made me laugh out loud and I have been sat here simmering for the past 20 mins mouthing the word bastards to myself. Hey ho....nevermind!!!
Thorin
My total deductions are more than I got paid in my first job, I hate the tax man. Although could be worse, Germany is 50% tax.
carl0s
Received our Bonus at work today and FFS, I have lost nearly half of it to the pissing tax man! It's a lot of money to just 'give' away, but if you were a low earner you'd be saying "They should tax the rich more, and the low earners less!" Which is what they are doing. Obviously you earn over £33,300 p/a! Which to me is a high earner, although I do accept that living costs in some parts of the country are very high.. Still, I agree it's sickening, but money has to come from somewhere. It would be best overall if there was a real hard look at where the money is being spent, and a massive shakeup. Havard
Concentrate on what you have got and not what you never saw!! If I read my payslip, the tax deducted would send me mental. H.

Schtuv
I'm sure if I had a minute I could be a little more clear and eloquent about this, but; I disagree with taxing bonuses (discussions around subjects such as IR35 go here). It's from your company to you saying 'thanks' for a job well done, not from your company to the tax office to say 'thanks for taxing us all year', which it effectively ends up being. The tax office must be laughing when it comes to bonus time - all that extra tax for no reason at all.
Thorin
They should introduce a higher tax band for say people over £100k, tax all the bloody londoners more

SMiFFAD
Know how you feel, i get my bonus end of jan, and the total deductions were more than i normally earn plus the student loan company had a field day assuming i earnt elleventy billion a year! I look at it as i earnt that bonus by working hard all year, what did the tax man do to earn it? Oh i forgot, we have to fund peoples houseing whove never done a days work in their life, silly me. MKIVDreamer
Try this one for size - I work for the tax man for 5.2 months of the year - this is based on Income Tax alone. If I added up all the other various taxes on my income, I'm sure it would be well into June before I started working for myself... I don't mind paying tax, but I do wish it was just the once for every pound of income I earn, not the multiple times it ends up being... BAH!!! DaveK
My tax for the year is more than my g/f's annual salary which is not good. Still - look on the bright side. You remember the last time you got caught speeding? At least your fine wasn't based on your earnings. In Finland, your fine is proportional to your earnings - which would include your bonuses etc. - and if you'd had a good year (pay wise) you would be screwed. One of our big bosses got caught for speeding the same year he'd sold off his stock options - I think he had the record for the highest speeding fine in Finland. DaveK
I guess it's a fact of life that your spending / standard of living rises to match your income. It seems impossible to me that I could live on half of that.
Guest Nicholas
I could probably live on 30k it would be hard though then again I live in London so pay ridiculous prices for everything... Martin, I bet it's cheap to live in yorkshire though and you'll have a much better standard of life
