Whine from gearbox (V160)

I am getting a whining noise from my gearbox on all gears. The noise gets progressively worse as the speed of the car increases, the noise is more prominent in 5th gear. All the gears on the transmission work fine though. Does anyone know what could be wrong or would can rebuild the Getrag box???

Also, is it safe to continue using the transmission in the current state?

Cheers

Have you checked the oil level? Do you know what oil is in there and when it was last changed?

I wouldn't continue using it if it was me.

Mark at Phoenix knows his way around the Getrag now. I believe he rebuilt IanC's for a good price.

Are you sure its the box and not the axle/prop? Does the noise change while under load?

As Jake mentioned, Mark at Phoenix is becoming rather specialised at Getrag issues so may well be worth speaking to him for advice (Not too long though as he's trying to fix my car!)

Does the whine change pitch? If so does it match road speed or engine speed?

I believe Mark @ Phoenix 3rd parties out the gearbox work to a specialist, and yes they did 5th gear on mine after I minced the synchro ring, and yes it was a v good price. And it's still working to this day, another good sign ;) Oh and need I say that they still did it on time despite about 6 days of delays by Toyota sending the wrong bits 3 times in a row.

Yep but by worse do you mean higher pitched or louder? :) If it's road speed it could be the output shaft bearings, if it's engine speed related then the input shaft or pilot bearing. It's not going to be individual gears as you wouldn't get all of them at once doing it.

I had this ghastly crunch as I hit 5th instead of 3rd with the clutch halfway up during a drag run, and from then on I had to match revs to change into 5th, otherwise it clashed the gears... Quite different to your prob I think!
