jaymdee
Hi, My car (J-Spec) has been at work for the last 10 days or so as I've been working away. The last time I drove it, it was a bit sluggish starting. Well now the battery is totally dead I've bought a 'HCB005' from Halfrauds and just tried to fit it, but the battery terminals on the car are too narrow for the lugs on the battery. Anyone else with J-Spec found this????? Have I bought the wrong one? How do I get this to fit? Please advise as I need (and want) to get it moved cheers
Thorin
J-Spec's usually have smaller battery terminals I believe, you're best taking the existing battery clamps off and fitting new ones.
Pixelfill
I had this too, Japanese Domestic cars have what is referred to as skinny post batteries, Halfords only sell batteries for the UK domestic market, which have the fat terminals. You have two options, replace the battery with one that has skinny posts (from a specialist Car electronics motor factors) or replace the clamps with ones that accept the larger UK terminals. I went with replacing the clamps, but I had difficulties trying to use halfords screw type clamps, and in the end went for some others, but had difficulty finding them too. Good luck Mike

Wez
I replaced my terminals, bit of a pain but makes it easier to get batteries.
Thorin
i have never come across this before and i have changed a few batterys on imported cars I know, mine already had larger battery clamps on it, I don't know if JIC changed them when they did all the other work to get it through SVA etc.
absz
just loosen the nuts right off and try to spread the terminals with a large flat screwdriver, or you can always use the mans best friend (HAMMER)
jaymdee
Surely you should be able to get a converter clamp so you put the narrow J-Spec terminal over a post on the clamp then put the larger UK-Spec terminal on the converter clamp onto the new battery?? Would be easier and safer than cutting and recrimping the original cables... J
Ark
Just did mine this weekend. Since you have a TT, you will have problems moving the cables far enough to fit, because of the PAS reservoir location. Keep the battery you just bought and get a negative terminal from Halfords. You will need to take your dremmel to your Toyota negative clamp - cut off the loop, and all edges, making it into a flat bladed spade connector with a hole through it. Enlarge the hole enough to fit the screw for the new clamp through. The positive clamp is more trouble. Because of the PAS reservoir, you can't twist the cables far enough to do the same as for the negative, so you need to buy the UK spec terminal clamp (about £14). I can get you the part number this evening, unless someone can jump in here. Don't bother trying to bodge it, because it'll only come back and bite you. Oh yeah, the HCB005 battery is also about 16 cms across, but the JSpec batteries are about 12 cms across, so you'll need to either cut your clamp, or buy the proper one. jaymdee
Cheers Ark, A work colleague knows someone who runs an automotive electrical outfit, so is ringing him to see what he suggests. I was thinking the same as your suggestion for the negative, hadn't considered that the cables may not be long enough, or that the clamp may no longer fit!!! Am going to charge battery tonight to see if that allows me to get the car home tomorrow. Probably have problems with the immobiliser and alarm too !! 2JG
That's strange... I got my new battery from halfrauds and they had ones on the shelf with skinny terminals, specifically for JDM cars.

jaymdee
Cheers Ark. Have topped up and charged up old battery and will probably exchange the HBC005 for HB054 which has J-Spec fittings. Seems easier than pissing around with cables and connectors etc!! many thanks for replying with the numbers though J
