Muffleman
Bought a stock TT for work and when I bought it, it sounded like it needed a wheel bearing doing. Got one done on monday and it was still noisy, had the other one done today - it's still noisy ! It's a cyclic noise, and rises with speed. Inaudible under 45mph but noisy at every speed after 45 upto at least, er, 70 The garage said that one tyre had a carbunkle, could this cause the noise ? It's quite a high pitched drone and dead annoying ! Engine load makes no difference, cornering neither. Any suggestions ? Cheers Matt
chilli
cars have 4 wheels could it be one of the other two? does it make any difference in gear or coasting? might be transmission related i.e. halfshaft, diff, propshaft etc...
RobSheffield
pads squeeling on the disc?
Muffleman
Nah it's definitely coming from the rear hence both rear bearings done, and I dont think coasting in neutral makes any difference - I will give that a try tomorrow tho
Muffleman
pads squeeling on the disc? Er, a little when brake pedal pressed. Rubbing pads ?
RobSheffield
Quite possible Matt Id remove and inspect, and if not too worn replace and see how you get on. If worn you could get some new ones
chilli
could be pads then yes, worth a go
Muffleman
Previous owner recently had whifbitz put goodridge hoses, motul fluid and porterfield pads in, so they're probably quite meaty still. Will give this a try, cheers
chilli
when driving if you apply the handbrake does it make any difference? could easily be the prop bearing?

Robert
Hand brake shoe? mine was making a horrible noise i thought it was the bearing but was the handbrake shoe had come loose.
Muffleman
They re-did the handbrake shoes too. Might have some 18" alloys going on soon, that will rule out tyres I'll try the handbrake whilst driving tomorrow
Scooter
could just swap the fronts and rears round to rule out/in the tyre theory?

Paul Whiffin
They re-did the handbrake shoes too. No we didn't! How about diff bearings?
Muffleman
No we didn't! Calm down mate, ok just to make it ABSOLUTELY CLEAR - the garage who did the bearings did the handbrake shoes, NOT whifbitz. Ian at Turbofit had a look today, its not the diff and reckons it is still bearings - so its going back to the garage who did the bearings. What a PITA
