Guest mk47
Three men were arrested, including two for firearms and drugs offences, as part of routine police stop checks. Officers pulled over a total of 48 cars during a day-long city centre operation yesterday. They used number plate scanning equipment - known as automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) - to detect motorists who were driving without proper documents, such as insurance, tax and MOT. Cars were targeted near St George's retail park, off the inner ring road, and 15 vehicles were seized. Two men, aged 19 and 20, were arrested for drugs and firearms offences and another 19-year-old man was arrested on warrant.

Guest mk47
lol good suggestions but afraid not! well this is what happened, was happily driving on the way to work in my mates car (after a visit to mcdonalds for a £1.99 fillet meal) and we get stopped as a routine check. all is fine until they notice the little flare under the glove box, and say oh wait a min this is a firearm. argued the caase with them and said no it isnt it doesent take lives it saves them! and no the officers are convinced its illegal and arrest us on the spot regardless what we said. in the car said the car went through sva test if its illegal then y the fuck is it there? they wouldnt have none of it and kept us locked up for 4 hours before letting us go without charge! what the fuck! plus a nice picture of the car in the paper. very pissed off and is there anything that can be done about this? MR.B
is there anything that can be done about this? Get them to print you a full public apology for a start bud.
Guest mk47
We want to go to the papers again and give them the low down on whats happened really.. when the bikes came to us they said pull over, my mate stops and he says no not here further on in a side street which happens to be right opposite the mercury building. so bet some fool got all happy and came running out for a pic - no idea when he showed up. and yes we got the flare back. Homer
You could write to the newspaper and explain your side of the story. Also a letter to Police complaints may get you a formal apology (Though I doubt it). It seems very extreme to lock you up for it though, they must have heard of cars coming with flares before now... Scoboblio
How the hell is a flare a firearm? I can understand if it's outside the law, but considering the approach of a 5 year sentence for anyone carrying a gun....... bit harsh? It doesn't bloody fire anything! ChrisSZ
Any part of a weapons system is classed as a firearm - including ammo and magazines (the box of bullets that fits into a gun).
Scoboblio
So a flare would be classified as a firearm if it can be fired from a flare-gun? Can anyone confirm if this is the case with the flares found in Japanese cars?
ChrisSZ
So a flare would be classified as a firearm if it can be fired from a flare-gun? Can anyone confirm if this is the case with the flares found in Japanese cars? I'm fairly certain this is the case. The flares in the cars are (a) not fired from a gun of any sort and (b) are not projectiles - they 'sit' and burn. Distress flares are seperate from the firearms regulations otherwise all sailors/yacht-types would need to get a certificate :)
geoffvalenti
Another great bit of PR by HM constabulary I know we're only seeing one side of the story here, but if what mk47 says is true (and bear in mind his name is only one letter away from a well known firearm ) this can do the public opinion of the police no good whatsoever. Surely somebody there could have had the nous to say, "look, its illegal, we're confiscating it, now on your way" Keeping them locked up for 4 hours on firearms charges, for something that is no more than a glorified firework is gross stupidity
Guest mk47
im back sorry just caught up reading, geoff your right in saying youve heard my side of the story BUT if you go on page 1 there is the whole story on the link wkdtime posted, and ive also pasted the story according to the papers. they claimed it is illegal to have a flare but how they connected that to a firearm i still cant work it out! theres a picture showing one of the police men getting into the drivers seat of the car and which really gives him the HERO image and showing the community that we were definately OWNED. although we are not in the pic but the cars pretty well known, so its not very nice really! after 4 hours we are let go with no charge, and with the flare.
