What can it be - auto transmission TT, when staying on P revs coming up to about 1200-1300 every 1-2 minutes for a second and then drops back...

70K miles on the clock, serviced regulary

something wrong with the engine?

no smoke etc

As already mentioned thats normally a sign of a faulty or sticky idle control valve. They're very expensive to replace so remove and give it a good clean.

Also reset the ECU (battery terminal off for a few seconds or remove ECU fuse). You'll need to drive for around 15 miles for the ECU to relearn (keep off boost for a few miles), but should be spot on after that.

Just remove the water pipes and unbolt from engine then blast it through with some wd40 should work ok then, its controlled by the ecu to open when higher revs are required when cold or air con comes on etc.If you do a search you may find some pics of where this is.:)
