Changing the car battery

I changed my battery last night only to find that my key-fob now doesn't work and my alarm keeps going off and that I can't start the car (due to security system).

Does anyone know what to do in these situations?

p.s. I don't know the code for the radio/cd security either !!

It's all going t1ts up!!

try pressing and holding down both buttons on the fob for about 10 seconds and see if that does a quick reset on it.

I also found a problem where I couldnt arm the alarm as it would keep going off, I went round each sensor and gave it a good push and 10 times and the problem went away, so its possible the door, boot and bonnet sensors are getting a bit iffy as the cars get older.

I've just phoned my local toyota garage up and they say I have to take out the whole cd/radio unit, then send it away in which it will be re-programmed (or de-securitised). It will then be sent back to me in which I enter a code.

Blimey !! What a pi$$ take this is going to be.

Surely it's not that complicated is it ? I thought there would be a database of VIN numbers and codes etc. on Toyota's computer system.

I did have a nightmare with your alarm at one point Paul, where the thing wouldn't disarm - I had to go home (12am) and get another fob and pick it up... Then that one wouldn't work a few days later - wierd.

I always kept both fobs with me after that.

I hate UK spec alarms, they are terrible systems.

Gaz.

Thanks for all your suggestions so far.... I've just been out for the last hour trying them all but still can't get the engine started. I think the imobiliser has kicked in and I can't dis-arm it.

I spoke to the garage again and one of their machanics seems to think that they do have a database where they can reset radio security etc. But I've no way of getting the car stared to be able to get to the garage in the first place.

So far I have tried the following:

-pressing both buttons for 10 or more seconds on the key fob.

-taking out both ecu fuses for over a minute.

-checking doors and windows are closed.

-trying my backup key fob.

-disconnecting -ve on battery with ignition turned on.

Is there anything else that I can try? I take it this is not what happens every time you need to change the battery?

I had the same thing with my UK alarm (see here for full thread ) but basically to cut a long story short an autoelectrician friend managed to disconnect the alarm to get me back up and running, but was not able to fix it.

I sold it like this but if you end up looking at the costs of getting it to Toyota + whatever they will charge, it might be better value to get a new run of the mill Cat 1 installed where it is.

only time i've had problems with any of my sup's has been via alarms, know how you feel at the moment and realise the above is not what you want to here :(

(BTW after all the troubles getting it started i was expecting problems with the stereo but it was fine and didn't need to be re-coded, i think because it had not been touched/tampered with?)

Well after trying every possible suggestion I had to get my Supra towed to the Toyota garage this morning. It needs the immobiliser unit sent away and instead of getting it re-set they send a new unit out to replace it. Which means I'll get a brand new set of key fobbs (wehey!!) :conf:

New unit is going to be around £150 if I remember correctly. So heres some advice to all you Supra owners ..... NEVER let your battery go flat !!

Even though I never had my alarm armed whilst it was in winter storage I never realised that the main battery still drains power to the alarm/immobilser system for its respective power supply battery. The reason my old battery went flat was a combination of a severe cold week and this unknown drain of power. This still occured even though I always ran the engine for half an hour every Sunday !

The good thing is that my car will be back on the road on Wednesday

Half hour of Idling probably wont even put back in what you took out by cranking the car when you started....!

The alternator puts out the same voltage no matter what speed the engine is doing, but the amperage goes up with higher speed, the car really needs a run, or a trickle charger, the latter being more preferable.
