tDR
Fitted a 2nd hand (allegedly 4,000 mile old) 4,000 stall PI Hi Stall torque convertor with my Dad to my car on Sunday, purchased it from a member on here. Didn't have enough fluid at the weekend so finished off the car this evening. Once started up, I could hear an immediate rattling coming from the bellhousing on the box. Carried on going through the motions of ensuring correct fluid level in box and ran it through all gears a few times whilst off the deck up on axle stands. Rear wheels seemed to be driven ok in any of the drive gears and the noise couldn't be heard like this, only in neutral and in park or idle speed in driven gears. Took the car for a spin to test, did one easy run up through the gears twice nice and gentle... all seemed well so then gave it some beans - car picked up like a shot and went, continued and ran through each gear ok like this with nice fast changes. Then started driving at normal pace for about a minute (was on a country road) - at this point I observed a strange drone in line with revs - and then went for kickdown - got no drive, just loads of slip and bounced off the rev limiter Coasted 'til I could turn about. Had to do a 3 pointer but couldn't get drive in forwards or reverse. Stuck it in neutral and my Dad had to push the car back for me to complete my turn. Then sat there trying each forward gear but nothing at all...... just revs everytime I prodded the accelerator, rattling sound still present. Turned car off and back on after a minute, selected D and sure enough... got drive again so limped the 3 miles home, coasting for about the last third of a mile as lost drive again - was just revving up when I tried to accelerate again. Managed to coast to garage entrance - Dad opened the door, I turned car off and back on again and once again found enough drive to pootle into the garage. Rattling sound still present, fluid level checked again and correct. Checked the workshop manual fault finding section and it reckons "No drive in forward or reverse when warm" = Torque convertor fault. Does everyone agree with this? I'm pretty pissed off I've wasted a day solid working on the car if I've knowingly been sold a duff Hi stall TC!! I'm trying to get ready for TOTB5 so now need to source a brand new 4,000 stall TC like yesterday and possibly a boostlogic box if there's one available and can be with me within a week or so since I've now gotta find the time to take the gearbox off again and do the same bloody job Can anyone help? Cheers, Brian.
Gamer
Sorry to hear of your troubles Brian. I wish I could offer some support but I am not that clued up on the TC issues. I will say that I had sort of the same symptoms when I had the problem with my last BL box/hi-stall. Still not sure if I cooked the clutch packs or the TC failed (Or both). But when it was on it's last legs I would have trouble finding a gear and it would hit the rev limiter (which was when I found out my cars rev limit was raised to 8k )

tDR
I did email PI last night... still awaiting a reply. Hoping they can do something with it / send me a new one direct for a reasonable cost. I bought it from a member on here, who in turn bought it from LeeT on here. LeeT has kindly come forward and explained the TC spent some time with slowdog........ for some reason as soon as I read that I'm 100% the TC is fcuked Cheers, Brian. Ouch, thats like telling someone they have terminal cancer. I would have to agree with you on that one. Definitely a death sentence for the TC... I find that shocking and you cant really get much lower than causing someone deliberate harm. Hope its not too expensive
jagman
It sounds like it does not have enough fluid in it,even though the dipstick says full, was it seated properly in the gearbox and fully home/free to turn/engaged on spline? no weight was put on the gearbox spline during removal? either way it will have to come out again ,inspect the tc for any witness marks of rubbing and check the spline coupling for any damage, you can get the tc repaired in this country if it is damaged.did it come with new bolts? tDR
jagman - definately enough fluid in as far as the dipstick goes. That's checking with selector in park with the engine running after a run. Yes TC was fully home on spline and could turn freely. No weight put on gearbox spline during removal. Where in the UK can repair a hi stall TC? And am I likely to get it back still having the same stall speed if I used such a place. Any idea on price? Cheers, Brian.
