Why is Valvoline 5/50 so highly rated on this Forum?

Erm, I have to say......... yes Chris I have :( Not often. In fact I have once hit 22 psi (1.5bar) on a track day. Other than that I let off the throttle when my boost light comes on at 17.5 psi (1.21bar)

I was dreading the piston ring and cylinder chamber symptoms as well as the Turbos please say it isn't so :(

This could be a defining educational moment in this forums history:

Remember - Don't go over 18 psi(1.2bar) boost. Look at the internal pictures of Justin's block! It cost him £7,000 to sort out.

Are there any obvious checks for me to do before I book it in with you to do a re-build:(

Cheers

J.

Edit: I had one of your restrictor plates in place on the track day so could have hit 2 bar if I didn't have it in!

Toyota recommend a 10w oil not because a lighter oil will cause excess oil consumption, but for protection in hot climates and anti drain back reasons. If the engine is sound using even a zero weight oil shouldn't cause excess oil consumption. I am not recommending using 0w oil, just saying it shouldn't cause excess consumption. But hell, what do i know, I have only been using Neo 0w oil for 10 or so years in all sorts of engines whose makers recommend a heavier weight oil, and none have burnt oil or leaked it past the oil seals, for reasons of reduced oil drag. :)

Justin, give it a try, they sell it in Halfrauds now.

Chris, I have to say that I know a lot of people with MKIV's who have had high consumption on Mobil 1. Maybe it is excessive boost, but a heavier oil seemed to cure it. On my first engine, which experienced high consumption, when it was pulled apart the rings, pistons & bores, infact the whole bottom end were all fine.

What was causing your high oil consumption then? the oil must have escaped somewhere :conf:

It's difficult to say. The consumption was fine if I used synpower or Castrol RS 10/40.

This wasn't the reason for changing the engine FYI. I had a fully built one so when the stocker came out we took it apart to see how it had faired after many 1000's mile abuse.
