Car wont start

This is bizarre.

Guess you'll have to check for 12v with the ignition on at the Ign fuse (kick panel), the AM2 fuse & the EFI1 & 2 fuses (fuse box behind battery).

This should give a better indication of where the problem lies.

If you have jump leads then try connecting the Sorento to the Sup. Should rule out the battery being a problem if it still does this.

Haha tempting but you'd be asleep and/or sober by the time I got there.

Anyway - you're going to need a multimeter if you want to troubleshoot this any further... Do what K14 says, you can easily (relatively) check for power on the IGN fuse, and that is a good start in pinpointing where the problem lies.

Ok, I'm guessing a multimeter is what I've got in my garage - two metal 'pens' attached by wire, one which has a series of lights that show the voltage? So I put them where??

Just checked and eliminated the battery - 9v at the terminals. Now I havent got alarm or central locking, or anything in key position 1 either. Losing light too . . . is this solvable in 24 hours??? Dont think I'm going to be showing at southwest motor show on Sunday :(

Hahaha 9V at the battery terminals? If you are sure then that battery is absolutely shagged out :) It should be 12.5v standalone, 13+v when the engine is running and anything under 11.8v and the car probably won't turn over :) You may have found your problem...

Below 10v everything will shut down & go to sleep.....

which is what I recommend until tomorrow when a new battery can be installed for approx £40 :D :d

If you want to try you should still be able to jump start the Supe of the Sorento, just to confirm it all works nicely before getting the new battery. This is because it will see 13.5V from the Sorento with it connected by jump leads & engine running. Once the Supe is started its alternator will put out 13.5V & plenty of current to keep it running. Only problem is it won't start again without a jump start until the new battery is fitted.

Halfords HCB 005 battery, before you ask :)

Ha ha ha bloody ha - and I was just about to offer a weeks full board :D

I've got a receipt in my hand Ian for the exact battery you mentioned which went on the car new on 28th March!!

I've just tested voltage at the fuses. It has 6v at both the EFI's and the AM2 but not showing anything at the ign inside - either that or I couldnt get a good enough earth.

Will now go and hook up the sorento K14 to see if it will give it anything. Its strange I've had many a knackered battery on many a knackered car, but none where I have lost everything almost. The battery has been on charge over five hours now and it seems to be getting worse.

Now stop laughing at me :(

Ok - definitely eliminated the battery - connected it to the sorento and nothing. I'm not getting any ignition lights at position 1 of the key, nothing.

Do you mean you connected it via jump leads onto the duff battery?

If there is some mad internal short in the battery could this cause it to stil not work?

Disconnect the battery completely from the car and test it with the multimeter. If it's less than 12v, it's not happy anyway.

Did that - was holding 9 volts. The battery isnt the only thing not happy. Have put it on charge and will leave it overnight.

Could I have simply disturbed a cable or a connector which may be doing this when I took off the dash? I've been thinking. When I got in the car this morning to try it, I thought I turned off a switch to my underbody neons, but I dont remember seeing them on last night and I would've done as it is soooo dark here. If I had of left them on, then maybe the battery is drained. But after a charge I have tried to switch these lights on and nothing is happening. So, could there be a fuse on these that has blown that might be connected in-line on the live somewhere? I dont know, clutching at straws, making wild guesses and hoping above all hopes, knowing it cant possibly be, that the battery will be 100% in the morning and the car will fire first time. Now that really would be sweet dreams.

Many thanks to you all today for your words and suggestions of advice, and your patience and thoughts. See you tomorrow . xxxxx

Is it connected to the car while on charge or are the pos & neg leads from the car disconnected.

Just thinking you may have a huge short somewhere that is draining the battery down big time?

And if the sorento was connected with jump leads & didn't start it up then something is wrong... I haven't seen this with just a battery, and one bought in March too??

Try charging the battery overnight with it off the car, then check the voltage. Then fit it & try the ignition.

Ok - I see where you are coming from. Will go and disconnect the battery terminals.

Just a thought but immobiliser?

Don't know what immobiliser you have but mine is ok from taking battery out for hours.

But if you've only got a couple of volts the imobiliser will have shut down anyway!

The 6V at the fuses sounds not at all good. Big voltage drop somewhere there.... probably the source of your problems. I'm guessing this because from 9v at the battery to 6v at the fuse through a relatively big (guage) wire means there must be a high current draw to drop 3v across that wire. But its not enough to blow the fuses, so less than 30A.

There's a current drain somewhere... its just finding it! Something is permenantly powered up.

If the battery recovers its charge overnight while being charged disconnected and shows 12V+ in the morning, this will prove the theory... mostly!

Not that stupid, cheers mate ;) Having said that I will check in the morning. :D Wouldnt be able to get the keys out if i had eh??? See blonde but not that stupid :D

I can get my keys out with it in gear. Very embarrasing in a petrol station when you can't for the life of you work out why the car won't start.

I've got a clifford alarm that was on valet mode when I was doing the work yesterday. This was still working this afternoon when I first got home, but not a little later about 5.30ish onwards. No alarm now, no valet light, no response from the fob. Thankfully central locking is working using the key.

I'm thinking of taking the battery back to Halfords anyway tomorrow as its got a 3 year guarantee.

Showing my age now. Off to bed with a warm coco & slippers. :run:

Goodnight K14 and thanks for today. Enjoy your cocoa.
