Tories propose red light changes

DRIVERS will be allowed to turn left at red traffic lights under new plans proposed by the Conservatives.

The proposal is just one of a raft of schemes unveiled today and is designed to cut the UK's traffic congestion.

Motorists would be able to turn left when the road is clear, in a similar system to that used in Canada and North America.

Further suggestions, put forward by former cabinet minister John Redwood, include speed limits that are only enforced during busy periods, more pedestrian bridges and more cycle lanes on pavements.

Edmund King of the RAC Foundation said: "It's good that the Conservatives have come up with a clear list of suggestions, but the turning left at red lights rule is a recipe for disaster.

"Put the rule into play on Baker Street outside Madame Tussauds, and you'd run into trouble very quickly."

Sounds like some good ideas there, but coming from John Redwood

Lets hope its someone else who puts these ideas into practise.

What about when there's a junction that requires a right turn from the other direction - currently light controlled; under the new scheme would mean both directions of travel would be filtering into the same road!!!

Variable speed limits and more pedestrian crossing routes is a good idea though.

More cycle lanes !!!! waste of time and good money, they dont use the ones they got now.

Before they give them anywhere else to play, they should think about getting them licenced, insured, and taxed like the rest of us.

honestly I think cyclists should be insured. They have the potential to cause damage/accident and are a method of transport for use on the public road.

I dont really care about taxing them as I think that would be OTT.

There are a LOT of cycle lanes around here (oxford - cycle city), but a lot of riders STILL use the paths, keeps them out of my way though :D

I agree with the thirs party thing- maybe it's something that should come as standard with home insurance or something as it seems excessive to have a seperate policy for it.

I always wonder what would happen if a cyclist smashed into my car for example. I'd be pissed that I'd have to claim off my own insurance.

Get their details and they pay if they were at fault. Otherwise the person will be making a trip to the A&E to have handlebars removed from a place where the sun does not shine. :p

If they are old enough to use the roads then yes pay like the rest of us.

Otherwise stay on the cycle paths.

so now you like the idea of cycle paths ?

I am not a vehicle, a bike is

your legs are a method of transport. If you walk into the road and get hit by a car and damage the car who pay,s ?

the NHS get lumbered with your bill

you me and every body who works for a living pays for the NHS through there tax (NHS/ national insurance contributions ) therefore you have already paid the insurance for that already

I hate pedestrians.

I bet you're one of those people who tells the police that 'you pay their wages' aren't you? :p

Yep, but I never cross the road except at a crossing (and obviously when down country lanes etc where there aren't any crossings!!). I annoy my girlfriend regularly at big junctions when on foot because I make her wait for the green man whereas usually pedestrians seem to just walk across when one traffic light goes red - not realising that another one has just gone green!!!!

Never cross down roads with parked cars. Never cross when traffic has stopped. Always give traffic right of way - even in car parks. Essentially car drivers don't know I exist.

I'm a car driver - even when I'm on foot.

Nothing wrong with them if they are used, what annoys me is when the council narrows the road to make a cycle path and the brain deaders still use the already narrow road, then hurl abuse at you when tell them to use whats provided.
