Engine out!

OMG , last time I did this I said never again! (wish I had a ramp!)

Anyways, after almost 4 years of running my T61, have decided to pull the engine and rebuild, replace all my ecu piggybacks with an EMU and modify my autobox.

Taken most of the day just to get the engine and box out, now to strip and see how it looks.

Are you dropping down to the 3200 because the 3800 was a bit high for that turbo or is there another reason ?

 

Just feels like I'm narrowing the powerband. The T61 makes good boost very early, (way before 3800) also, I use a lot of ignition advance off boost which makes it very responsive.

Think the 3800 is fine for the laggier turbos (or drag racing)

Well, I'm going to look at it after I've stripped the engine but if the offers still there I'll leave it to you. :) At least it can be done in comfort away from that dreadful footwell.

Actually they are connected, they are a one-way plug with a big metal connector joining all the wires - it's an earth point splice. Perfectly stock, normal, and unbroken :thumbs:

Also dude... you needs a fields harness!

 

top end is coming off on Sunday, Have a fields harness prepped by Ian C for my new EMU, so all those crimped connecters are destined for the bin (thank god!)

Someone needs to photoshop mock up that, I would but I'm at work. Might I suggest...

Opened the top end today. Can't believe this engine has done >60,000 miles, looks like new inside. No carbon on the pistons or head,Absolutely NO det whatsoever, measured the bores and Virtually no wear, (less than 0.0015" and no ovality measurable with my Mercer) can still see the original hone crosshatching!

Sending the head to a specialist for multicut valve seats and full refurb this week.

Now what concerns me is that the compression test showed two cylinders down to 120psi (others around 160). I'm hopeing that is down to valve seats, but they look pretty good. I dont really want to re-ring it as everything visible looks so good. Is there any way of testing ring condition without a full teardown? I was thinking of trying a gravity leakdown test, would that work?

I notice that you have water injection, that will have a lot to do with the cleanliness of the combustion area, how was your pump standing up to the under bonnet temps?

 

It was fine underbonnet (on the cold side) Using 80% methonal only at >1 bar.

Did you not manage to do a leakdown test before you pulled it appart? That would have given you a clue to where if any detremantal losses where coming from. :) Gravity fluid leak down test is not really going to be a spot on guide TBH.

No, did a wet test that indicated valves.

Just doing a gravity test on the valves with acetone. no leakage apparent on intake, very slight leakage on #4 ex.
