Carbon Fibre Spray

but c/f is stronger than fibre glass right?

Yes CF composites are stiffer, stronger and lighter than glass (and they therefore cost more - especially with the world shortage of CF at the moment).

Most of the 'street' spec CF composites are made with polyester resins which can be polished up nicely, as opposed to epoxy resins which the likes of Formula 1 teams use that have a matt finish and dont polish up well (though both can be lacquered).

Its worth noting that CF is only strong in the direction of the weave, whereas Chopped Strand Mat (CSM) is generally strong in all directions.

Some CF composites will have a layer of glass to 'hold' the CF in place (as CF prefers to lie flat) and a glass inner frame...so dont be suprised to see this.

Glass composites are easier to repair than CF ones should they become damaged.

Painting carbon....

Depends upon the quality of the laminating really. The bonnets that you buy should be of reasonable quality (ie no dry areas where the resin hasn't flowed or pin pricks in the weave) So you can get away with just using a decent primer and paint as you would with GRP etc. We paint all our wind-tunnel models using aerosols as it's cheap and quick, and with a bit of practice you can get a reasonable finish. The full size car parts are sent to an external paint-shop. Most of the livery you see on a modern F1 car is vinyl.

You can indeed paint carbon fibre. You can also get pretty creative, with the use of masks and slencils. When i worked for a custom painters, i used to paint these carbon fairings for a guy in london. The Ducati logo and the vents on these panels are the bare carbon masked out before painting. It's a tricky and time consuming job (hense expensive) but looks very profesional when done correctly.
