tbourner
It went on for several minutes!!!! There were like 4 police cars behind him and a helicopter, he was on the phone to the police and they were directing him saying where to turn off etc. (speed 3 - no control). Alex
He could have put the clutch in and disengaged the drive...might have had the engine bouncing off the limiter, but the breaks and steering would have worked till he got it to the side and then switched off.... Simple really that's why his story is cr@p.
tbourner
I said he could be a mental patient and nothing was actually wrong with the car but the missus said I was being nasty cos he was traumatised!!! Basically the throttle jammed, gearbox jammed, brakes failed, ignition barrel locked all at the same time!!!! Glad we don't have fully drive-by-wire cars yet then!! Supragal
Apparently he couldn't press the clutch down I thought I heard???? Seems he panicked, they will test the car I'm sure so if it's all lies he won't get away with it. Obviously just doesn't know about cars, some people don't just get in and drive them. I would have thought that brakes on a car could overpower acceleration? what was the doing, lightly covering them til they wore out?
tbourner
It's an auto - no clutch. That's what I said about the brakes, they will be strong enough to stop a car even at WOT! As long as you press them hard enough. He was saying the brakes were slowing him down and keeping him at 70, then eventually he saw smoke coming from them!! Why didn't he realise what was going on within the first 5 minutes before the brake pads wore away and press them a bit harder!!!! Dufus.
stevie_b
I would hit the brakes and yank the hand brake on, progressively harder. Your brakes would be toast, but it's better than crashing. Easy for me to sit here and say it though.
Supragal
Not that I've ever tried but can't you force an auto out of gear? Surely better than potentially killing someone?
Animal
Surely you can just knock the shift knob into neutral while driving, I've done it by accident in the Supe once - shifted from 2 a little hard and went past D and into neutral for a second. Do that, jam the brakes on and pull over. Fool.
black cat
what i good way of getting out of beeing a nob and crashing your car at 130mph. i may use that one...................
tbourner
Wonder if you'd get away with it, doing 190 down the M3 - police everywhere - swerving in and out of traffic. Just claim your brakes have failed and then crash into a hedge at the end and say the gearbox must have fixed itself on impact.

Supragal
I know someone that hoofed it down the seafront and the police saw him, pulled him over and he said he got the hole in his trainer caught on the accelerator they let him off.
Kip
Something wrong with switching the engine off and using the hand break to stop?? People seem to forget that they have two breaking systems. And it wasn't that long ago that most cars didn't have power steering, one is still able to steer a car without power. Just sounds like the typical BMW driver. Brains are usually in their flat caps!! Rob
Nah, billy bullshitter with a story snowballing. Thwack, nail/head interface scenario. I call "Munchausens by proxy" syndrome. Funnily enough he's an ex-lorry driver, and the last time this happened was a lorry on the M25.
Whitesupraboy2
there is no way brakes would get you slow enough from 70. First of all you got the speed 0f 70 to slow down from then you've got the engine at full throttle pushing against you. And i dont think you'd slow enough to stall the engine as you can go about 35mph in top gear and if it an auto it would automatically change gears down. A supra's brakes can fade with hard braking from 70 if you've just been braking before. We dont know what he was doing before. His BMW was no sports model so would of had poor brakes as well and would of cooked easily. Turning the car off hmm....i would of done it on a long peice of road, but steering lock can happen with keys in if you go all way to off position which im sure he would of done. Then of course brakes would be near useless too, though he would have handbrake to help him Hynside is a beautiful thing. We've all done something and thought afterwards....damn should of done it like that
tbourner
He had plenty of time for hindsight whilst it was happening!!!
Jake
:ThreadResurrection: *UPDATE* Stuck accelerator driver arrested A motorist who said he drove for 60 miles at speeds of up to 130mph after the accelerator on his BMW car jammed has been arrested. Kevin Nicolle, 26, of Southsea, Hampshire, was travelling down the A1 before he crashed into a roundabout at Blyth, Nottinghamshire, in March. He later blamed the high speed ride on a mechanical fault. Police confirmed Mr Nicolle was arrested on 24 May on suspicion of dangerous driving and later bailed. The lorry driver had said he began to panic when its brakes started to fail and he was unable to put the automatic BMW 318 car in neutral. He said he decided against turning off the engine for fear the steering would lock. Look at him, the shell-suit wearing twat. He looks like a right tosser, doesn't he? stt
Im sure I would be corrected and im still unsure as to why nobody has made the suggestion that if he had of just knocked the ignition off the steering lock would not have come and and also by leaving it in drive with the ignition off would have still provided power to the steering as the engine would have been still turning but also slowing him down at a lot less rate than the roundabout
ivan
I'm sure the original article said something about him being on the phone to the police for help during his drive. So how come they're just nicking him now? Maybe it's for using a mobile while driving.
