Guest gzaerojon
well its now a month away till my car goes in for a respray. although i trust my sprayer to do a good job in the prep stage (handles/bumpers removerd ect) he has sugested i leave the glass in. i have seen bad result from this over the years and was thinking of taking some time off work to help pulling it apart. my question is if i decide to remove the glass is there anything i should know, like special tools ect? am i in for a nightmere taking this on? it's a one off job for me and i want to get it right first time, and feel confident it will last. any sugestions on things to remove to achieve a better job please let me know
Jake
Apparently, the rear side windows are a pain. I had my car reprayed a different colour in Sept 2003 (from Red to Grey). Dude left the front and rear screens in place when he did the repray and they've been fine ever since. The small rear side windows were more of a problem, the finish wasn't great and I had to take the car back to have them re-done. Dude said he would insist on customer paying to have the rear side windows removed and refitted in future.

RobSheffield
rear side windows withstood 3 days of me attacking them - i left them in. new rubber seals on front and rear windows would be advisable, but isnt necessary as Jake says...i left my front and rear screens in
afreemason
We had madam's NA re sprayed last year ...... although we didn't get Liam to do it, we did get a lot of advice off him which resulted in us leaving in the front and rear windscreens as the seals were supple enough to be taped back giving a good finish ...... this is however impossible with the quarter lights. To avoid tide marks you do need to take them out however they are a bonded unit and a potential bugger to get out. We had quite a discussion with the body shop as Madam discovered that they were £700 a piece to replace and the body shop promptly decided that they didn't want to do the job because one broken quarter light would wipe out their profit on the job and the excess on a body shop insurance policy is obviously quite high and far in excess of the £700. Although we weren't overly chuffed we agreed that if the window broke during removal (fitting is the easy bit apparenty) then we would cover it ......... however ...... and here's the cleaver bit ..... check the glass clause on your policy .....Nikki is insured with the club insurer (Sun I think) andtheir policy cover ANY BROKEN GLASS ....... WHATEVER the reason ...... including an unfortunate workshop accident repairing that little bit of rust near the quarter lights (obviously at this stage you won't be having a full re-spray will you !!!!!! ) Don't get me wrong you have to word things very carefully with the insurer but it's all very above board, and won't impact on your no claims bonus or incur anything other than the £50 excess. So, I'd get the body shop to do it if you're going to a body shop, or if you're doing it unofficially, then be prepared to claim for a house hold accident !!!!! If you want more info pm me or if you want some knowledgable advice on removing quarter lights pm Lovatt !!!! Well bugger me, I think I might have actually posted something helpful on this site instead of just taking the p**s out of you "old" car owners ..... needing re sprays and all :p PS - when the body shop actually got round to the quarter lights they said they came out quite easily !!!!!!! Still twin turbo ones must be stuck in better to with stand all that hot air ......... from the engine ...... honest !!!!!
Pete
i also have heard the rear quater windows are a arse too also remember something about you must buy new rubbers??? They come with the rubber attached. You can't buy the rubber seperately.
Guest gzaerojon
Thanks guys, i guess its just these rear windows being the pain then. i might ring auto glass or someone like that and find out if they'll take them out for me. (its there money if they fcuk it up!! Rob are the front and back window rubbers fitted after the screen, i e glued around the edges after the bonded screen is fitted (asuming it is a bonded type on a soop) if the rear windows come out ok but the rubber gets damaged and needs to be replaced (tbh i'd rather change all the rubbers after a respray, would really tidy the car up) then how would i do this if i cant get these rubbers? what type of glue is used for bonding windows? maybe it could be heated to help get them off? (not sure by oven's big enough to take the soop unless i remove the spoiler )
absz
i left the front/rear screens in place and removed the rear quarters. the annoying thing was that after all the hassle of removing the quarter glass i stupidly placed the glass under the car and after a few weeks when i pushed the car out of my garage to take to the bodyshop i drove over one. supRo
I had a paint problem near the rear quarter window. When it was repaired (re-sprayed) the bodyshop cut out the rear glass unit and re-bonded it back after the spraying. Not sure how exactly! It looks as if they took out the glass, re-sprayed and put in new glass! (done under warranty too)
