Roy
hi guys - i'm after some advice as i fear something maybe knackered on the car. everytime i engage reverse and depress the accelerator to move, i hear/slightly feel an odd 'clanking' sound when it begins moving. sometimes it makes the sound once sometimes twice or three times at regular-ish intervals ie clank or clank ... clank ...clank. this is different to the sound it makes when engaging (thunk!) reverse. what could this be - driveshaft maybe? if so, is this expensive to fix ? one other thing, it doesn't make the noise sometimes when i engage reverse but don't depress the gas pedal, seems to make noise more prominently when i press the gas. any thoughts/experiences/observations would be greatly appreciated. BTW - j-spec auto '94 ... thanks guys.

Dragonball
Take no notice m8 - these piss takers. Tsk! So sharp he'll cut himself! (only cos he asked before I could get there!LOL!) OK - before panicking Where's noise coming from? Rear? Front Offside? Nearside? Engine? Anyone stand with bonnet open to try and spot/hear where from? Do you have to move at all for it to start? Does it stop when you depress brakes? (brake pads clacking?) -= longshot i know Shaft is more like a grinding noise then a 'clank' (well it was in my last car) Strange one

Roy
thanks guys for the responses (even you john! ) paul - think sound is coming from roughly the middle of the car and it seems from the underneath. haven't had anyone look with the bonnet open. only happens when moving in reverse, stops when reverse is disengages or i stop. dunk657 - not been clamped coz i looked for a new shiny yellow hub-cap and it wasn't there ... LOL! john - will look into what you suggested but somehow i don't think thats it. i fear uj's or shaft maybe ... will let you know how i get on ... any more thoughts would be welcome, thanks. Paul
Roy, Is this noise there when on full lock or even when straight? (I had a noise like you describe but only on when turning/reversing) Paul
Roy
hi paul - no, not on full lock or even going forward straight. it only happens if i am reversing out of a car park spot AND applying the gas ...
Paul Laing
i'm sure http://www.supraforums.com had this post up, could check there mate.
Keith C
It's the sound of people's bones being ground to dust, despite panicking and screaming out 'Look out, he's reversing, save yourselves!', all of which you completely oblivious too while you concentrated on trying to work out how to get above 112mph. Failing that, it's your neons dragging on the floor. Helpful?
Guest Martin F
Bit hard to diagnose noises over a BBS as somebody said. But as a simple check it may be worth checking your diff oil. Do you know when it was last changed ?
Ian C
When I reverse out and put almost full right lock on, I get a clunk coming from front left underside of the car. Didn't one of our American chums work this out to be an engine mount or something? They called it a 'popping noise' and it only happened with a lot of lock while reversing... -Ian
Paul
Ian, that's the noise that I had, do a search on 'I don't creak anymore'. I followed the same route, some bolts need to be re-torqued under the front. Paul
Roy
keith - as helpful as ever i see mate .... martin - thanks, that was one thing i didn't think of (so whats new?) ian - i seem to get this noise even at less than half-lock but i guess the mounts bear looking at even if it is just to eliminate it as a possibility paul laing - thanks. i will look it up there ... paul - will check with phil as well ... thanks guys.
