Supra_Nish
Am I right in thinking these are then categorised as CAT D? What would be the issue with buying one? Higher insurance? Not fussed about selling it on later so much. Can anyone see any other potential problems?
SuperSupra
Yeah CAT D I think, like my old Astra was - oops! Problems: 2 cars bolted together? future falling apart issues? different front and back number plates? Quite simply you don't know what you're buying, could be anything! Supra_Nish
Hmm never thought of that. Its only a small micra, can't see anyone going through the hassle of cut and shut for that really. Then again, its a runabout for my mum so dont really want it breaking in two. Decsription says its come straight from insurance company, but thats just talk I guess. Will look for signs of bodges, anything else?
Ian C
My MkIII supra was a stolen/recovered Never had any problems (apart from a BHG lol) -Ian
carl0s
Cat D is least damage. Cat C is usually more damage, and requires some kind examination (VSI test?!? ) before sale. Cat A & B are breaker-only. Someone I know sells loads. How would you know if the airbags have been put back in properly or not though? Guess it depends how cheap the car is whether it's worth bothering or not. Edit: Sorry, didn't read your post properly. If it's just stolen/recovered, it might not have been damaged at all and *might* still be recorded as Cat-D.

toyotasuprauk
Stolen recovered is fine IMO, they dont go on a Q plate just keep there normal plate. No problems with insurance either.
toyotasuprauk
Also when they say it comes direct from insurance company its sort of true. The insurance company find it and send it to a salvage company that store cars and auction them on their behalf. So this person has probably bought the car direct from one of these auctions. Conrad
I've had loads of cars on the register and never had any trouble with them. I've even bought both an MR2 and Celica that were both CatD stolen recovered. I just needed new locks and column etc etc. The only way a stolen recovered car is any different to a normal car is in it's value imo.
Suprasteve
you might have problems selling it on in the future if the new buyers do a HPI test ? but if its not worth much by then i doubt many people would bother with a hpi test ? I was stupid enough to buy a 309 GTI (many many moons ago) without a hpi test then later on tried to part ex with a dealer for another car and he wouldn't touch it !
