Removing gearbox

Has anyone got a step-by-step on doing this? I want to check out my flywheel, as not only do I get a clatter as I turn off the engine, but I also get a higher-pitched rattle/chitter on overrun in any gear/speed, or if I rev the engine in neutral.

 

Unless someone can think of something else it might be?

Well they are quite big from all accounts and i think there is one on each side of the box.

 

Should be able to lever the flywheel and check for worn dampers.

Not had the pleasure myself yet, but it looks to be like any other RWD car.

Nah, they are just covers AFAIK. Will double check the book of words tonight but i'm sure they are just covers.

Keith, i think i may have exactly the same problem as you - does the noise completely disappear when you push the clutch right down?

The covers are just pressed & shaped metal plates, 2 bolts to remove, one on each side. You can see the flywheel teeth but you can't wedge a blasted crowbar into them to lock up the drivertrain, grrr. You can see some other round bit o metal as well, could be clutch, could be another bit of the flywheel, who knows :)

uv got problems if there's oil behind the inspection covers :)

 

i meant a proper lift to get the car high, just make sure u can get the car high enough to allow the tranny to come out. i dont think the small axle stands will do it, but could b wrong. its bloody heavy, so dont drop it on yrself. the instructions on mkiv.com r good but balancing the tranny on the jack looks a bit risky to me.

I don't know - if it goes away when you put the clutch down than I'd have thought that it was coming from the gearbox...

Yeah, I've spoken with Chris W who's told me it's a total b****** of a job without a decent ramp and lift.

 

He's quoting about £250 +parts and labour (flywheel is £250 + vat) to do it for me, which is tempting as he's done it before and has a better selection of tools. Plus he'll be able to check the rest of the car out for me ;)

 

Only problem is getting there and back...

Just to clarify, i don't take 2 days to remove and refit the box and flywheel, I just want to cover my arse in case I find something unexpected wrong. Even then 2 days would be too little if parts not in stock at Toyota need ordering. Might need a clutch, and I only have uprated ones on the shelf, blah blah.
