So, with that theory in mind, how do you feel about the traffic cop that did 159mph down the M54?

He had a good reason - to see what the car could do!!! - needless to say he didn't even get a slapped wrist.

Where do we draw the line?

how can you compare testing a police car with getting to your ill child?

Surely getting to the ill child, and not having an accident is better than speeding and having an accident and never getting there.

It can happen to all of us - even the fastest drivers in the world - that's why they are called accidents.

Personally, I would rather do the speed limit and get there.

Needless to say by being stopped he arrived later than if he had have done the speed limit?

So the moral of the story is......

I was in a similar situation once whereby I had a phone call from my then wife to tell me our youngest son was very ill. I got home in double quick time breaking speed limits all over the place. I didn't do that as a deliberately reckless idiot but as a frightened parent whose reason and logic had been replaced with anguish and fear.

Would I do the same thing again? Probably.

He may even be more dangerous at that speed anyway, I'd guess that 'race mode' would take over, and on the F1 track you don't get a mum with a pushchair walking over a crossing in front of you!!!!

I'd never claim that Schumacker is the safest driver in the world just because he's the best, he's probably crap in normal driving!!

Having said that, I agree with Colin, in that situation your emotions take over and although it's not a valid reason, it's an explanation of why he did it, and a fair one that I'd say quite a lot of parents would probably do the same.

But, in situations where your emotions take over, then should you be driving that fast?

I appreciate he's an F1 driver with an inordinate amount of skill to us mere mortals, but a F1 car isn't a road car and the road isn't a track.

Even in my work car, I've wouldn't drive that fast in a built up area in a 30 limit.

.

In a word, no. But that doesnt stop the emotive reaction when something like that happens. Please dont think I am condoning his actions, I am not. I am just pointing out that people do react irrationally given certain situations. In saying that, his excuse may be a complete load of bollocks and he just fancied blasting it home
