engine revving too quickly!

Hey,

I noticed a problem yesterday, this could be down to what I know is already wrong wit the car.

My coil pack clips are shagged and two of them have totally lost their covers. Moisture had got in as I hadn't driven the car for a week so some of the spark plug tips (Iridium) were covered in carbon, I guess because of the water and trying to start the engine. I did wire brush the tips a bit.

Anyway the car starts/runs fine except when second turbo kicks in usually 3rd 4th and 5th gear the revs suddenly jumps from about 3800 rpm to about 4400 rpm (I'm BPU), then drops back down to 4000 then climbs back normally. When the revs is spiking like that, the car accelerates accordingly without clutch slip, which is nice but isn't right. It did seem the boost reached the pre-set 1.2 at 4000 rpm.

But it does happen sometimes with just the 1st turbo, say 2000 to 3500 rpm.

Causes:

1, turbos are overboosting - if so why?

2, sparkplug/coil clip issues?

3, I had taken the top IC pipe and induction kit off yesterday morn (in case the fittings are loose) - but problems with those wont cause these sort of sympthoms?

4, anything else?

thanks,

Ro

There is no way on god green earth that the revs can shoot up to 4400 and then back down to 4000 without you lifting off unless it's wheel slip or clutch slip.

The peak torque of the engine is at about 4500rpm which would make some sense...as it's torque that will break a clutch.

V had this a while back, I did a graph from a video of the tach and speedo. Rough, but showed the speed increase was constant whereas the RPMs went up and paused. Slipping clutch. At about 4000rpm, torque peak ;)

sorry for the hijack supro....

..but what's the deal with auto's when it comes to something like this?

i've never had an auto before and i know there's obviously no clutch to be operated by a pedal but is there anything that is comparable on an auto car to the clutch going kaput in a manual?

There are 5 or so clutches in the N/A auto and 7 in the turbo apparently, which are used when it changes gears. The real clutch-like thing that you feel is a sort of fluid-clutch, called the torque-convertor. I'm not sure which wears out first, sorry..
