Anyone on here been to New York?

I'm going in December with the missus after getting a really good deal on a flight (£224 each).

Without even looking into hotels I just booked the flights. Now I've been looking into hotels they seem really pricey, more than I'm used to paying in Blackpool anyway! :eyebrows: The cheapest ones in hostel type hotels with shared bathroom are £55 per room each night and any decent one is at least £120 per night.

Anyone stay there recently and can recommend a decent but inexpensive place to stay? Or can advise which hotels/areas to avoid? Any help appreciated.

I have been to NYC several times...I always stayed in a hotel called The Milford Plaza on Times Square. Good facilities, you can get smoking rooms if required and it's in a good area for sightseeing, but just out of the way enough to be quiet at night. Do a google search for hotels in New York though. You might be able to get a better rate if you actually contact the hotel by phone and book. If you are flying to JFK airport, expect to pay about $35 or so for a cab to manhattan.

As for sightseeing, Empire state building is open till midnight, so it's worth a day trip and a night visit for views of the city. If you get chance, shopping in New Jersey tends to be cheaper still, as not many places add on the sales tax. Sales Tax in NYC is about 7% of ticket price, so don't forget to take it into account.

Any other questions? I'll do my best to help.

I've stayed in a good few hotels in NYC, by far the nicest was 'The Time' on time square, however that was silly money...... around £500/night for the business suite....

For me tho, all I want is a nice clean bed and a lockable door, since I don't like staying in hotel rooms when I'm travelling, I like to go out and see things...

In that respect one of the better places I stayed at was called the Chelsea Inn, VERY BASIC, shared bathroom, rooms are nothing special to say the least, BUT you do get a telly and a comfy bed... what more do you really need....Just don't go to the bar next door to it. (village people, need I say more, and yes I almost went in on my first night over there...and changed my mind when I saw the ratio....100-0 (men/women)...

And there is a cracking pizza joint a 3 minute walk down the road on 5th Avenue...

the Chelsea? Isn't that where Sid killed Nancy and then topped himself a few days later?

We stayed in the Radisson Lexington on Lexington Ave when we were over there in June. It was OK but the rooms were quite small and the drinks were dear.

Avoid the Sheratons...unless you are over 90. then you will no doubt appreciate the pre-war regency decor, the stained curtains, the filthy bath (that hasn't been cleaned properly), oh and the baby in the interconnecting room next door that dosn't stop crying.

Marriot Marquis...Time sq :ecstatic: :ecstatic: ..Always was the coolest hotel..with rooftop rotating restaurant etc, a huge atrium with high speed glass lifts..that speed you up 48 or so floors...i always stay there when i am in New York and never dissapointed with either the service or the facilities...honestly its only a tad bit more espensive than the Sheratons/and others but its well worth it for novelty and 'wow' factor...'awesome' as they say  You will be very impressed!

Click View photos and check out 'The View Restaurant' theres nothing cooler than eating breakfast there...overlooking New York..

Edit....I just realised you wanted bargain price...bollox to that just bung it on the plastic and treat yaselves

I stayed in a Sheraton, it wasnt as bad as Greeny makes out, but it wasnt great. TBH it was cheaper around NYE than many others. Crappy decour yes, but the room was a good size but the fawyer seemed have the money spent on it rather than the rooms!

You're gonna pay as much/ if not more in some cases in the Times square area for your food and drink than you would do in London.

The Marriot looks cool, right in the middle of things and the theatres. There is a double tree right in the middle of times square, theres plenty of Hiltons around too, you wont have trouble finding a place. :)

Yep I think I prob just had a one off bad experience...tbh the reason i booked into the Sheraton in the first place..was because they were doing a special deal and a breakfast for two thrown in..I'd been staying in Florida and only there for a weekend...but when i got in the room with a view of a brick wall I pined for the Marriot Marquis where i had stayed before a couple of times (each room with floor to ceiling windows overlooking the Cityscape)...and was forced to make every justification...in order to get my own way... (we spent a total of 15 minutes in the sheraton before hoping in the cab ;)

I mean i should of done the sensible thing and stayed in a budget hotel too...but after staying at the Marriot through work once i became addicted...anything else was a downer...got spoilt thats the prob...(bloody credit cards  )

If you want to save a few quid stay just outside manhatten. We were on a budget as it was our last stop on round the world trip, and we stayed in one of the airport hotels in Queens (not as bad as everyone makes out). Much cheaper than the centre, decent hotel, Free shuttle to the airport and manhatten was only a 20min tube ride away.

Thanks for the advice everyone, much appreciated.

Gonna have a look around to see what I can find. Without thinking I booked the flights for the 8th December, not even taking into account that the hotel prices that close to Xmas would be so high. :innocent: You live and learn.

The best I can find so far is the Belleclaire on the Upper West Side. Coming out at £608 for the week. There is cheaper but I was hoping to be close to some of the sites on my first visit.

Thanks again - Conrad

Ah didn't realise you were staying for a whole week..think Gav's reccomendation sounds about the best so far then, it actually looks quite a nice cosy hotel.

I wouldn't worry about it being near the gay village...normally means its a safe area with little or no crime...Unless you look like them or you are a male model or wearing designer clothes..they wont bother you! :D

...I only ever stayed in NYC for weekends or two or three days at a time.. ;)

Conalex

i've been several times.

Best place i think for location and value is a Red Roof Inn.

http://www.redroof.com

I stayed in one very near Empire State Bldg. 34st i think.

Also it really was a good deal - BIG room, nice fridge, nice ensuite, tv, all usual stuff, and i think it was USD110. something like that.

This was in May though, so inevitably you are ALWAYS gonna pay a lot more at Xmas time at almost ANY tourist-popular destination in the world.

But yes, try redroof - best deal i found.

rgds

ps. now found link on that site to the exact hotel i was at:

cheers
