W58 NA 5spd clutch questions

Evening all.

I have read before (and was told when buying the car) that the W58 is a noisy box, particularly on start up.

Mine is now getting to the point where it's taking a good ten minutes for it to quiet down, and even then it will still be noisy even after a decent run.

No videos or sound clips as yet I'm afraid but I'm hoping this is a common fault, it basically sounds like a rotational grinding noise. Imagine a metal fan spinning against a hard surface, that kind of sound.

Is this actually normal, or a common fault and if so what's the remedy? New clutch?

Thanks in advance.

A good condition W58 is all but silent. If you get a whirring noise in neutral, when you have your foot OFF the clutch, and it goes when you depress the clutch and engage a gear, it's shaft bearing noise. they don't handle much over stock N/A torque well, especially if they are already tired or high mileage.

Probably lots of stuff, layshaft bearings, mainshaft bearings synchros and hubs, several needle roller bearings.... It can be an ongoing and costly do refurbing manual boxes. A good used one will be far FAR cheaper than rebuilding yours properly. Manual gearbox repair parts have historically always been very expensive.

Gearbox shaft bearings, in my experience, stay noisy once they are worn or damaged. Lubricant temperature can muffle it, when the oil is cold it will be thicker and dampen the noise, when hot the noise is usually more noticeable. A noisy clutch release bearing that's in permanent contact with the cover fingers may exhibit what you describe... possibly.
