C_Strike
hey again. another bit of advice needed.. had car to mot today.. wen i collected it i found that the battery isnt charging. iv bought a new battery as the other was old and will get an alternator. im wondering if the lights on the dash in this pic could possibly be somehing a bit more troublesome than a new alternator? am i also right to assume that the yellow light relates to a rear light cluster issue? im hoping that as i had to swap rear ligts over for the mot and will swap back to the tinted lights and loom anyway so would be sorted in the process. im also getting flaahing indicators.. i have no alarm connected at this second so shouldnt relate to that. cheers in advance you knowledgable bunch! lol
Graham1984
I would guess it's the alternator and wouldn't use it until it is changed if I was you.
C_Strike
i wont be driving it, not with the lights on the dash and then repeating sequence of indicator flashing all the time.. i would guess the police wouldnt be too appreciative of a car that indicates both sides when turning! lol. if it is just an alternator though, i can deal with that.. its the waiting around thats killing me, i wish couriers worked weekends! lol. poor work ethic! lol. just upgraded from an open to an lsd diff, new sparkies, coilpacks, belts, pulleys, filters, oils and fluids and exhaust... now a new battery and an alternator! ha... joys... 5years of stalwart reliabilty, never needing to spend money. this year though, is slowly costing me! iv not had my car driving for the last 3months and thought today might be the day i get back behind the wheel, feels like i was a bit nieve now. anyone want to buy a third kidney... like a spare or something? C_Strike
..can i use an NA alternator? cheers
RobUK
The alternator required is dictated by auto/manual gearbox not NA/TT. The auto alternator has a higher output and can be used on either.
C_Strike
Oh right. Thanks for that. I'll need an auto alt then:-)
Guest Roger NE
There's no earthly reason why a car with Automatic transmission (OR a turbocharged one for that matter) should need a higher output Alternator ! And anyway . . . the rating is just the MAXIMUM current output it can deliver So personally I wouldn't worry WHICH Alternator you fit. You could also get yours repaired (typically for around £40 if you take it in yourself)

Guest Roger NE
To a local place that repairs or reconditions Alternators, Starter Motors, Washing Machine Motors etc etc ! If you're friendly with any local Motor Factors / Accessory Shops, they might tell you who they use If the bearings and the windings are OK, and it's just a Transistor or Rectifier that's blown (most likely), it should be a very cheap repair (although they may have a standard charge) Edited September 13, 2013 by Roger NE (see edit history)

Ian C
Is the problem actually solved, have you fitted it and the lights have gone away? As you say your indicators are behaving oddly as well and the CAT temp sensor light is on, I suspect something more like an earthing fault.
