which side of the fence do you own

Check your deeds, fences only indicate the boundary.

Strictly speaking he divisional wall or fence should be a shared responsibility between the two parties. If the fence lies entirely within the boundaries of your own property, then it is your fence and your sole responsibility.

Incidentaly, if a fence is entirely within your own boundaries, you can choose which side of the fence to see, the inside or the outside!:D

Not strictly true I'm afraid. If you are responsible for the boundary as marked on your deeds, then the boundary fence or wall is your responsibility unless it is wholly on your neighbours property (if it straddles the boundary and falls down, you have to fix it.)
