Water temp problem

Recommended Posts

I ve just put my new engine into the supra and everything seemed to work fine except the water temperature gauge doesnt seem to work at all (stays at the bottom). However, to re-check we pulled out the sensor and tested it outside in warm water and the sensor and gauge seemed to work. So it doest work in the car, What could be the issue here???

Also, I ve blocked the following water lines:

Stock turbo water cooling (got a T61 now)

Water cooling line for stock oil cooler (since I have removed the stock cooler for an aftermarket)

Heater matrix water lines are blocked as I live in 33 deg C most of the year.

Is this an issue???

Thanks

How did you check there was circulation? By pulling a hose off?

My guess is you've blocked off all of the "bypass" routes for coolant through the engine, so when the thermostat is closed there is actually no or very little flow into the thermostat housing. Hence there is no way for warm coolant to get back to the thermostat hosuing.

Try putting the heater matrix back in circuit temporarily, make sure there are no air locks and try again.

Don't do anything other than idle the engine until you get this sorted out.

No i havent yet tried pulling the hose off. But the top radiator hose was very hot when i held it so I assumed that water would have had to be circulating for it to get hot. Should I ll try pulling the hose now

Actually I've looked at the circuit again. There's a seperate bypass that doesn't involve the heater matrix at all to blocking it off should be OK. It looks lijke the bypas is external, and on the opposite side of the head to the thermostat. Is that still there?

Is the temp sensor in the head or is it underneath the thermostat?

I agree with Digsy, the top hose can get quite hot before the thermostat opens. If you don't need the heater matrix just put in a hose, to keep the flow. IIRC, there have been issues with inadequate coolant flow when the feed and return to the matrix have been blocked off. You must get this sorted before you run the car under load.

Check that the radiator bottom hose is gets warm after a few minutes. If that is happening then you will definitely have flow through the engine and the thermostat will be working properly. Personally I wouldn't run the car at anything much above idle until this is sorted out.
