BBC1 program on Pedigree Dogs

Kennel Club object to BBC making them look bad, taking bat and ball in (reconsidering giving BBC rights to broadcast Crufts).

Since the Kennel Club encourages the breeding of numerous dogs which are mutant cripples (all Bulldogs and all Pugs for a start), I don't think they have a leg to stand on (much like the modern version of a Dachsund).

Kennel Club changes breeding rules to end cruelty

A review of breeding standards for every pedigree dog species in Britain is under way by the Kennel Club in an attempt to introduce kinder rearing for pets and showdogs.

The tough approach was signalled when breeders of Pekinese were told yesterday that the dogs’ flat faces were no longer acceptable because they cause breathing problems. The problem has arisen because the muzzle has become obsolete through breeding and the flesh that would have naturally covered the dog’s muzzle is instead in its throat. Other breeds to face scrutiny will include the Clumber spaniel, bloodhound, bulldog, mastiff, German shepherd, basset hound and St Bernard.

In the Dog papers there's loads about the KC and changes they are making to improve things, seems that the programme has given them a real kick up the arse :)

Bottom line is that if you love dogs then you'll support any changes that help them have healthier lives, an awfull lot of breeders are purely in it for the money and have been left to get on with it for too long.

Yes it was about that. Have a watch on iplayer. Some of it is horrendous. There was footage of a boxer with Epilepsy fitting, it actually made me cry. The King Charles are one of the worst apparently. Just rolling about screaming in pain. These dogs are actually winning show and qualifying for crufts.

It did us, we have always had boxers and the one in the programme looks just like ours and it broke our hearts :(

I'm not a violent person but some of thise breeders needed a good slap.

We might decide to show ours, not sure yet. We'll probably be going to Crufts next year though.

Changing the breed standards will be difficult, they'd have to breed with non standard dogs/bitches to get them to the new standard, after so many years of telling them to have non breed standard dogs neutered!!!

Thank god. I love German Shepherd's but "show" standard ones are effectively crippled :(
