Blown off by a Corsa? - Surely not?

ive no idea, ive never really done that, if im honest i rarely go above 2-3k around where i live. I live one mile from work and so do average 2 miles a day, it only on the odd run to see family in Leeds etc i get to go on the motorway.

I think im still applying the engine logic from my old Escort 1.3 Yreg, dropping it into 2nd at 60 will blow the car up! hahah

yer the new vxr corsas are rapid due to weight and power distrabution etc etc and yes my little corsa kicked arse due to its power to weight ratio blah blah blah

my mate who bought it from me is making it into a little rocket this month by having it pushing out over 200bhp so he tells me so that should be even more rapid

im just not sure that he is going to be able to control it as he only had a 1ltr lupo before this lmao :)

At 60 overdrive is definitely the key, i've be caught out before at that speed. For any kind of instant acceleration around 60 turn Overdrive off - In my experiences anyway...

I agree, just turn it off and it will drop to 3rd, keeping the revs at a nice level where you're pretty much on boost, the accerelation is so much more different then compared to having to drop a gear and then floor it, it does work but it's not as rapid if you've already made it drop the gear in anticipation.

TBH I rarely use manual mode, just overdrive off and dropping back into 2nd usually has enough control for me. Use overdrive off especially when coming through bends otherwise the control's not as great if it ups to 4th;)

I had a 2l corsa in my 106 gti mate. Granted his was a stock redtop so pushing around 150 and my gti is pushing around 140 but he got his ass handed to him at silly speeds.

There aint no way on gods green earth that a 200bhp corsa is going to take a TT at speed in a straight line. I raced a turbo'd corsa (4x4 chavalier engine iirc) in my MR2 and absolutely wiped the floor with him. His 1/4 mile times were terrible as i had already done 1/8th before he even got off the line. The power to weight is important but its completely pointless when you go over what the chassis can handle.

As for the Auto TT, overdrive definitely needs to be off but shame on you for speeding up heading for a roundabout :p

Do you need to double kick an auto to get it to shift fast and hard?

There are a few Corsas in the Leeds area that will shame a Supra. Even moreso in the twisties.

My colleague used to be heavily into them and his was fully stripped out with some mental engine in it and he could leave me for dead until the m-way.

Nizmo's micra would stay with an evo if its in th wrong gear, you had no time to get going you, wrong gear, and a very nippy car starting to go past you, no chance im afraid as he was prepared. Well you will know next time, but not approaching a roundabout aye :)

Well there was a defo delay before the car decided to go anywhere, the revs shot up high, the car screamed but didnt really move, thats what made me think maybe somethings wrong with her?

i would say there is the possibility there is something wrong with the gear box i had the very same symptoms on a Rover Sterling (2.5l honda engine) when you kicked it down it hit the rev limiter but didn't go anywhere (i sold the car on to a dealer :D), all this talk of he "outshifted" you "cos its a manual and they are allways quicker" is to be honest absolute tosh and might have been relevant 30 years ago but not now, i have never driven anything but auto supes and one of their strong points is in defense of the "surprise attack" ;) where someone catchs you unawares, you just floor it and the gear box changes down in an instance and at best the sneaky assailant will get level with you but thens its goodbye, if your car can not do this even with a corsa :rlol: i would say you need to get it checked out

I bet it's a knackered autobox. Mine used to do this and a refurbed replacement sorted it.

You should be able to pick up an autobox dirt cheap due to amount of people who've decided that they are driving gods and need to swap to a manual.

Mmm that doesnt sound too great, so its possibly a gearbox problem.

Is there any way of finding out if there is a real issue or not apart from replacing the gearbox and seeing if the problems gone?

i am sure there must be another member near you who could take you out in theirs so you could compare, the TT Supra has mid range punch in abundance and a 60 mph rolling start is pretty much what the Supra was built for, it really is the sweet spot, not much should be able to get past you on the road in this situation

Wouldnt this be about 4.5 - 5k on the clock perfect position for the second turbo getting ready to boost up. Can't you get well into the 80leptons in that gear (to the redline).?

No shouldnt do...number 2 tubby *should* come only line at 3.5k maximum...

That is, unless you have an EBC fitted. In which case, you can set the turbo's to boost later by lowering the bar...:)

They really piss me off do those Corsas.

The new VXR corsa does 0-60 in the low 6's now though as well.

Hahah some good replies there all, thanks for all your help on this. Ill try to see if i can get in another TT auto to see the diff, maybe there is an underlying problem or maybe im just crap at driving.....my odds are on the latter!

Thanks all.

  • 6 months later...

Sorry to bump up an old thread. Ive had 3 corsa turbos now and am just building my 4th for the ring this year, hopefully pushing 350bhp. They are lightening fast when they get going but traction is an issue from take off even with upgrades like a quaife diff. Also i never fancied throwing mine into a corner at speed lol, tho running full coilovers this year to refine the handling abit more.

Having got a std supra TT now its hard to tell which is faster as its two different types of power. I think he just caught you off guard but if he was at speed the traction would be with him so i dont think kicking down in even a manual would have gained you any momentum on him. Most run 6spd's now too, like im doing, so it would be a gud run up to 160+mph lol
