Hold the gear stick and twist off the knob

Last time someone told me that was with the 306 and I ended up smacking myself with my gear knob in the middle of the train station car park, I chipped my front tooth and had a badly swollen and cut upper lip. People saw me, twas very embarrasing.

I'm just happy i didn't knock myself out, but when people were asking me what happened to my lip it was hard to try and explain to them that i smacked myself in face with my cars gear knob, the general response seemed to be, how?
