CJ
That's clever... good find I did that test and it showed that my call quality was 4.2 out of 5. I did notice that when i did a speed test yesterday the latency was very high at over 200. I just run a speed test and these are the results now: Do you still want me to look at that other latency test?
CJ
Yeah, but a working (i.e. not faulty) DSL connection *should* be good enough, you'd think.. wouldn't ya? Colin: Any chance of doing a couple of ping tests to get some kind of idea if your connection is very laggy/latent from a command prompt type "ping -t 66.102.9.104" let it run for five minutes then press CTRL-C to stopp it and let us know the minimum, maximum and average round trip times that it gives you when you stop it. Then do the same for 158.152.1.43 I am seeing 35ms for the first and 20ms for the second. Sorry about this but it is been a while since I needed the command prompt - how do I get that up? I am using XP
carl0s
Sorry about this but it is been a while since I needed the command prompt - how do I get that up? I am using XP start -> run ->cmd [enter] 4.2 out of 5 sounds happy, and that online speed test will be affected by anything you might have on your computer using up bandwidth uploading/downloading, so that's good that you acheived 1.1mbit/s down and a relatively poor but expected 158kbit/s up. CJ
The 1.1 down is the best it has been for ages. Apparently that is now the minimum I can expect . OK, I ran those tests and the results were: 1st one - Min 94... Max 145... Ave 97 2nd one - Min 82... Max 164... Ave 84 I am assuming that tose latency numbers are very high given what you said yours were. In saying that, they are way down on what it was when I tested yesterday (albeit in a less controlled way).

There's some processing overhead with the VOIP that adds more to that but even so that should be good enough.
CJ
Just tried the Skype again and I have the same problem as yesterday. They hear me fine but I cannot hear them as it is breaking up. I assumed that was down to a line problem yesterday but it may be that the phone is kaput (although it worked OK late last night). Edit to add: I am going to go out and buy a cheap usb headset to see if that makes any difference.

CJ
This is very strange. I bought a new headset (just a plug in type not USB) and that is exactly the same problem. So at least i now know it isn't the phone. I have tried ringing the UK through my normal phone line and that is working OK. I wonder if it is a Skype problem? Edit: According to the Skype site, it is all working fine.
CJ
Could there be problems with the ADSL line even though the normal phone line is working OK? Is there anything else i can test to see what could be wrong?
carl0s
you've definately set skype to use your normal sound card now, not the usb thingy? How does the skype test call sound?

The test call starts OK then deteriorates into "Norman Collier" type speak - as the other calls do. I am assuming that this is sounding more and more like a line fault? I am assuming that this is sounding more and more like a line fault? It's sounding like your connection either isn't good enough, or your ISPs route to the Skype servers isn't good enough. CJ
Well this is very strange! I called OTE (Greek equivalent of BT) and they are next to useless. They told me that there was nothing they could do as i wasn't using their modem! They make BT look like the world's best CRM co.! So, after getting fobbed off with them, I downloaded the X-lite program and after doing so had to reboot my machine. When I looked at it, I was bloody confused and so didn't get a chance to use it. Instead, I shut down the PC and unplugged the router and phone cables etc and gave them all a good cleaning. I also did the same to the USB dongle for the phone and then re-started the PC. I then started Skype and made a test call and that seemed fine. I then called a company in the UK and that was fine too. Surely all that cleaning was just a coincidence? Anyway, so far so good and it is fingers crossed it stays that way!

CJ
Guess your PC had been tangoed. Well, no matter what it was, it has now gone back to being fine again. I wonder if it might have been anything to do with the router? I took that apart and took the power out etc.

I think you are right I have continued to use it again today and it is now working perfectly with excellent quality coming in and going out. Once again, many thanks for all your input.
