Jay_vr6
replacing the rad is easy and only takes an hour, its the bleeding of the coolant system that makes you cry
Big Red One
why can you only use toyota red
Kranz
why can you only use toyota red Because its special I used Comma long life red antifreeze with some Bosch stuff in it that makes it last 5 years. Same kind of stuff really just cheaper If you use Toyota stuff it comes ready mixed with deionised water. If you use something else mix it with deionised water not tap water as tap water causes deposits to build up in the engine & rad.
JustGav
Supposedly the red for life stuff is specially mixed to suit the aluminium parts. To be honest I use comma red as well with 5l of deionized water which I put through a normal water filter and then topped up with redline water wetter. cheekymonkey
I'm doing a rad change at the weekend. On CW's advice I'm using bog standard ethylene glycol based coolant, as the Toyota stuff is just that with a dye that changes colour based on the age of the coolant. Kranz
I thought the Toyota stuff was OAT rather than ethylene glycol?
cheekymonkey
I'm always up for being corrected. I really don't know - but I would like to find out before the weekend
Kranz
I thought the Toyota stuff was OAT rather than ethylene glycol? No... after lots of Google research I'm wrong. Toyota 4 life is the same as green Ethylene glycol just with a red dye
Kranz
This is what is recommended by Comma: http://www.commaoil.com/Product%20Pages/Coolantswinter/xstreamgreen.htm And this is what I use: http://www.commaoil.com/Product%20Pages/Coolantswinter/xstreamredcon.htm Oops. Well, it hasn't caused any problems yet

Chris Wilson
The system needs no special bleeding, and any glycol based antifreeze is fine, and can also be used for the popular side line of causing organ failure in difficult partners Quite where this nonsense about the system being difficult to bleed came from i don't know
cheekymonkey
Hi Chris is the Thermstat easy enough to change? I have found where it lives on the EPC but that doesn't really give many clues on how it's fitted. If it's just common sense that's fine
Chris Wilson
If you are happy enough to try and add a line lock to the ABS a `stat change will be a walk in the park I will PM the final price tally in a minute
cheekymonkey
Heh, cheers Chris, thanks for the "vote of confidence"! Plan to fit new injectors at the same time so it's going to be an interesting weekend finally getting down and dirty with the Supra.
