Whitesupraboy2
I have a wireless network seems to run fine. I am running a machine about 10ft (in same room) from wireless router and been having speed problems. So I was doing ping tests to google and found pings dropping. So I then decided to ping the router itself and getting time outs to the router. So ive got it down to the connection between router and PC So I got a 2nd USB wireless network card and tried that same problem, changed the channel same problem again. I cant my head round it! Anyone got any ideas?
DamanC
monitor the traffic on the problem PC. Is it active when it shouldn't be?
DamanC
Some wireless cards are utter crap, same with the management software. I hate wireless networks, they are very inconsistant. If you get fed up trying, pick yourself a linksys or netgear wireless PCI card up and right that to your router. Who makes your current hardware? Whitesupraboy2
as far as i can tell no its not, Its got antivirus software on it....Im tempted to format it and start again. Forgot to add signal strength is 'very good' (80%)

Netgear Router Range max edition 2 Wireless usb cards tried (infront of pc for better signal) * ASUS * Netgear its bugging me, when pings are going through everything is quick when it stops, everything dies on the connection, web page loading the lot. DamanC
Yeah its common. Try setting the wireless card to full power/always on in the device properties, it sometimes helps. I have never used ASUS network cards before so cannot comment but netgears are one of the better ones out there, I get about 90% sucess with them. Try disableing your firewall for a short period of time, just to see if anythings changes. Im guessing when you reboot the problem PC, all is fine? Have you tried putting the problem wireless card in the non problomatic PC? If so, what happens?
Whitesupraboy2
its happening all the time. If i leave a ping going, every 10 - 20 succesfull

carl0s
Which RangeMax is it? I had similar problems with the DG834PN. I think I got there in the end, after altering/disabling various settings but overall it just didn't work very well at all.

carl0s
Well, it's at my mums and I'm rarely there, so it might still be shit but I think I did get there in the end. I kind of thought it was just a duffer because I bought it from eBay, but I suspect they are just problematic. They're an early/pretend MIMO Atheros thing. I'll connect into my mums and see what I have set now..
carl0s
Hmm. There really isn't anything in there to set or unset I have : Firmware: 1.03.35 Channel: 11 Mode: g only Wireless Isolation disabled WPA-PSK security that's about it. I normally like to go for WPA2 or WPA1+2 so maybe that had a bearing on things, or maybe forcing G-only. But like I said, it might still be crap. Gaz6002
Simple question. Anything between router and problem PC? Have you tried physically moving the PC? Interferance can be caused by microwaves, cordless phones etc etc and i've heard of this dropping packets.
Gaz6002
Also, have to tried hardwiring into your PC? It could be your net connection itself...
Whitesupraboy2
cheers Guys Gaz - Tried hard wiring PC and pinging the router then i dont lose packets. Attached screenshot of packet loss when wireless. When wired all

I had a cordless phone in this room so this got moved about 20ft away and out of the room with the PC and router. I have moved the tower about within around 3ft (space where its kept) and makes no difference. I normally can solve stuff like this but this one has got me! Gaz6002
it sounds to me like an issue with your router then mate. If packets are dropping when wireless but not hard-wired then that would be my next point of call. Does the router stay on all the time? I take it you've tried rebooting? These routers are sometimes not the most stable things in the world, especially if they are kept in a non-ventilated space and left on. My home router suffers from this and so i've designed a ventilation system for it. When you trace out from the PC does it fail at your routers ethernet interface IP address? Whitesupraboy2
I think its gonna be router too, im tempted to go back a firmware version. As I think I switched to wireless around time I upgraded the firmware. So Guess that could be the problem. When it fails it gets no where doesnt even hit the router. Router is on all the time as well its mounted up on the wall in the room so not covered. Yes tried rebooting it mate.
carl0s
I think they're just problematic routers. Are you using the 1.3.35 firmware? Have you tried setting it to G-only rather than "Auto-108mbps" ? Lots of PS3 owners having issues with interference (clicky)
Whitesupraboy2
I have found the issue. It is my xbox 360. The xbox 360 polls the airwaves on 2.4Ghz looking for wireless controllers, reason being is you can turn the machine on by the controller, so the only way to remove the packet loss is too completly remove the power cord from xbox 360. Ive had to write to netgear as the router is sold ass interferance 'adapting' device....when its obviously not

Glad you got it sorted dude Yep! they need to start opening more frequencys, so many things using this frequency, it was bound to happen! I think a new router will be needed.
