  1. I'd need to check with James, as this charger is powering this laptop which is his spare one. Its all very complicated as you can see
  2. Im sort of on the way back from Turbofit for Wayne, I could meet him somewhere? If he's okay with that? I should point out that the original charger died a very sad death and now only beeps at me when I plug it in and the universal one I bought there after - the appropriate adaptor - melted in the dc slot. So it technically has no working charger anymore [except james universal charger which I am borrowing] no its worse its a Advent 7074 [a what?? exactly] ]
  3. A brand new one would be great, but I can't justify spending more than that [at a stretch of the mind 200 I would go to] I've looked on all the mainstream sites and the cheapest are a little over 300
  4. No sadly. Theres a few student computer orientated internet sites, but again the same problem, I have no idea whats good value and whats okay value
  5. thats very kind of you. Its been put away in disgust so it is just sat there. If you fancy looking at it for me I would be happy to let you have a look. The annoying thing is that there isn't anything else wrong with it [although I think it overheated in someway so there may be a fundamental issue there]
  6. Thats cool, I have no issue with that. The best I can get for that money. I was on windows 98 before I bought a brand new laptop 18 months ago and I didn't have any problems with it Its the actual DC slot thats beyond repair. So yes, dead Although can I take the parts out of the old laptop and upgrade another one?
  7. I certainly do, but thats for discussion another day, on another thread.
  8. I need some help, I've been browsing ebay for the past few days looking at various laptops in the 110-170pound bracket - there are literally hundreds of them. My problem is, is that I don't particularly care what make, model, size, colour or shape it is Ideally it will have the following: 1)ATLEAST windows 2000 2)Atleast ONE usb [i know you can get usb expansions etc so Im not too fused if it only has one] 3)It would be nice if it had a dvd drive, but if it doesn't then a cd/rw will be liveable with and I will probably get a external dvd drive 4)A good graphics card of some sort, so I can look at photos clearly and properly. 5)The best processor speed I can get for the money I want to spend The rest of the stuff, memory etc I really don't care about. - just as long as I can browse the internet [broadband], download the occasional thing, use microsoft office, play music etc. I don't play games or do anything that warrants a really high spec machine Also I have just bought a USB 2.5" external hd carrier, of which I intend to use [taking the IDE HD out of my dead laptop which is 40b] If you fancy helping me out, can you recommend a few examples on ebay [buy-it-now] because I really have no idea
  9. ah ha, jolly good. So I need a screwdriver then. Thank you. Thats good to know I've not lost my files as I have photos and stuff which mean a lot more to me than the damn computer.
  10. Blimey that was quick. I take it that either of those options work despite the fact that my "laptop that is too be replaced very shortly because I broke it" doesn't turn on, won't matter? Sorry if Im being dim.
  11. Is there a way I can transfer all my data of my old hard drive onto a new laptop. Bearing in mind I can't switch my old computer [laptop] on anymore because it ate the adapter?
  12. me me me me me me Im sooooo excited.
  13. I had a small number plate on my FTO for well over a year and not once did I get pulled over. I think you will be fine.
  14. I don't have any immediate plans to get rid of mine. I already have a house, I have a second car, so I have no real reason to get rid. If I did decide it would be only as a final straw and I had no other option, but saying that, you don't know whats round the corner, its hard to say.
  15. Yeah this has been done, but I shall contribute none the less. I had an FTO. It broke down lots. It cost me more to insure than my Supra, and I managed to blow the first engine up within 3 months of ownership. Those were the days.
  16. That depends on how you look at it
  17. Yep my cheap runaround has already paid for itself in petrol cost alone. I wish I bought one when I had my FTO as well.
  18. What I think happened, was my laptop over heated [it was getting very hot] and melted the ac adaptor into the dc port, when I removed it, half of the plug stayed in the dc port [yes I broke it], and the only way to remove it was with a pair of pliers. Since then the port doesn't work and neither does an appropriate charger. I guess when I forced it out, I broke the internals. No its a cheap one from PC world. Advent a model which PC world no longer support apparently. I would say that it is really buggered, but if there's a possibility its not terminal I'd be interested in exploring ways of fixing it.
  19. I've come to that conclusion. Thats interesting. The laptop is 18 months old and nothing else wrong with it.
  20. I already know the answer to this I think..... If your ac/dc plug/socket on your laptop is buggered [thats the technical term] is there another way of charging your laptop battery? - IE external battery charger for example.
  21. Just don't expect a payrise this year.
