Looks like I have some decisions to make then! I just dont want to go single... partly because I cant afford it right now...
-
If it is the turbos it was only to be expected with the age to be honest how do you find the response of the hybrids compared to the stock j specs? my eventual plan is upgrade power to say 6 to 700bhp but with the aim of maximizing response rather than all out power. I dont think I want to shell out for an expensive turbo kit just yet so if the hybrids are good I may go that route
-
Spot on. Bpu on stock j spec twins... at a full 23 yrs of age. I would have guessed the turbos would burn all the time though right? and if anything should have been the second turbo to have gone and it only burns at lower rpm?
-
have to agree on the westfields ruling. I was a full 5 seconds behind it. But I was happy to takr that. The target was the evo and the rs4. I was surprised the rs4 was so far behind though

Blyton sprint circuit (outer circuit) was the track. First time there, a better circuit than I though. idea is to get at least one serious day at donnington or oulton park this year... but only if I can get her running without burning oil again. symptoms: -lift off, then touch the throttle and it chucks smoke out - idle after driving at low rpm -no oil burning on motorway or high rpm driving around track (no smoke during my runs round track) - no smoke when I started from cold yesterday morning Darren will have it at whifbitz next Monday so I am hopig its not too expensive to repair back to current spec for now... I dont have 7k for the full engine build I would like to get done while its apart

Well, yesterday was the second track day for the supra, so thought I woyld report back on the progress! changes from the last day out... well not much. Added the boost controller to run 1.2 bar rather than 0.9 and set my tyre pressures to 30psi rear and 26 front. well I was pleasantly surprised! Beat that evo 4 Full second per lap quicker! and was a full 3 seconds per lap quicker than an audi rs4 running 550bhp at the crank. only a fireblade powered westfield style car beat me. so on this basis I would say a good day! however... she is now burning oil, and I am almost certain it is the piston rings now... waiting anxiously for the trip to whifbitz next week to get the diagnostics and the next steps...

Thats a good point. makes me curious however if the additional capacity and in theory better position of a larger fmic is truly outdone by the stock ducted smic and by how large a ratio. And then on top of that, what improvement does good ducting give an fmic over a non ducted fmic... however, I would still hedge my bets that there is no really advantage either way below say 500bhp.

It is much more cost effective to develop an injection moulded box which can be commonised across car lines with a common panel filter cross car lines than to develop an induction kit (which could be designed as a common part, but then you are paying ALOT of money on each vehicle that doesn't have the power output and therefore need the flow capability of, for example, the 2JZ). The primary reasons any OEM designs a part/system the way it does are: 1)cost 2)timing in terms of testing/development time 3)purpose of use A standard intake system is a cost effective way of achieving the desired performance of a standard car. Plus it is designed to reduce induction noise as j_jza80 says And why would an FMIC not be working effectively? Its positioned at the front of the vehicle so should be working fine? However, I would agree that the more power (and therefore heat) you are producing, the more demand you will place on the IC, so a cold air feed is likely to be beneficial above BPU, but I would still say its more of a luxury... Anyway, apart from the first bit, this is just my image... its good to have differing opinions! Makes each car a little different.. otherwise we wouldn't have anything to compare!
-
This is an interesting point on turbocharged cars.... On an N/A I would preach the cold air feed thing as much as the next guy, but on a turbo car, with an intercooler? The whole point of the intercooler is to cool that intake charge, of course, you could say its all well and good making the intake charge more dense at the IC, but what about the less dense air it is pulling from the engine bay.. step 1... but then when are you using your boost? On the move... so there should be plenty of airflow into that engine bay (and much cooler than a hot engine bay sat idling). In my opinion, I would say don't worry about the 'cold air feed' issue on the Supra, especially if you have an FMIC. At least at BPU levels the IC should have no problem cooling that intake charge. I am as yet not a certified expert on the 2JZ, but I would say the real reason there is no real performance benefit to an induction kit is the fact the standard airbox should flow well enough to about 500bhp... an induction kit should help above this but at BPU, we are not there yet Go and enjoy those sounds and I don't only say this because I have an Apexi in my car

I can understand the short notice... especially with a friday day out can keep you posted of the next one if you like?
-
Anyone fancy a day out at a sprint course in their supra? this friday I will be joining a bunch of guys from work at blyton sprint track. all sorts of cars and classes will be there. we have 2 places left so if anyone fancies making it 2 or 3 supras instead of one from the mk or northampton/bedford area let me know! 75 quid for the track for the day. Just budget your fuel/tyres would be great to see how a few supras do against each other and to finally meet a couple of you dave

engine warning light post boost controller install
Dave Carroll replied to Dave Carroll's topic in mkiv Technical
From everything I have read on the EBC, it appears it is necessary to connect it to the TPS pinot and either the speed or rev signal pinot of the ECU to work correctly. However, the manual of course only states to connect it, not whether it is strictly necessary or not, and I do not profess to be an expert on this. I haven't tried without it connected, but when I first installed, and had connected the EBC to what I thought was the speed signal pinot (it wasn't...) the car would not even start. As soon as I connected to the correct pinot, it ran like a dream. Perhaps a shout to Paul Whiffin who I am sure has installed a few of these can shed some experience on this particular EBC? -
engine warning light post boost controller install
Dave Carroll replied to Dave Carroll's topic in mkiv Technical
So read the fault codes, only 1: 42 as I understand, code 42 is the no1 speed sensor circuit, which happens to be one of the pinouts I had to tap into for the ebc. I assume it isnt expected to throw this fault using the evc6 on the supra when tapping into the speed circuit? Or maybe it is advised to tap into the tac line instead? -

I will have a look at the fault codes sure However I did reconnect the piping as standard yesterday and the light disappeared... strange -
engine warning light post boost controller install

Yep exactly as I have done. by bypassed I mean capping off the points on the vsv the wastegate and the turbo compressor connect to as standard. -
engine warning light post boost controller install
Dave Carroll replied to Dave Carroll's topic in mkiv Technical
Yep, 2jz gte. Car is 1993 TT6 sorry. vsv bypassed is the first turbo vsv for the wastegate at the front of the engine. -
Completed my boost controller install today and initial setup targeting 1.2bar. only issue is I have the engine management light on, and it wasnt before. I have plumbed in the ebc as the advice elsewhere on the forum and the ebc manual says, and it is running perfectly - no issues with the actual driving itself. I havent read any fault codes yet but I assume this is down the the standard vsv being bypassed? should I expect this warning light? info on the car: -hks evc6 boost controller -bpu supra running 0.9bar previous to this install, now roughly 1.2bar. Usual mods for bpu it makes sense to me that the car wouldnt like the bypass of the vsv but want to check for advice. maybe I can unplug the vsv so I can still have that warning light tell me of real issues?? Cheers dave

Cheers, yep the brakes did very well. Its only a short sprint circuit, but it was constant hammering the track with only just enough time to let the engine idle to cool off between double runs, so was impressed! I have some UK spec brakes sat here ready to go on, but with the front tyres, I am glad I chose not to install as I imagine I would have been locking up all day!

Thought I'd report back my findings thus far this weekend with the Supra. Sorry about the long post (will try and add some picks and or bids over the next few days if I can get hold of them)... Been a good one so far!! Yesterday I took it to the track (Curborough Sprint Track to be precise) - didn't think it would be particularly well suited but I wanted to 1) learn how it handles and 2) give it a good test to see just how well built it has been so far. I am very glad to report back the car did extremely well, didn't miss a beat all day, ran perfectly all the way back and certainly impressed me. I always expected it would be one of the most capable cars there, and so it was with only a tuned Eve VI able to match it (unfortunately an Elise dropped it early on in the day). By the end of the day, the Evo was less than a second in front, and in fact the Supra had been top all day until that point, but at the times we ran towards the end, the front tyres were at their limit for me, so I conceded... To summarise the differences in cars: J spec 2 pots with unknown discs and Endless pads / AP 6 pots with EBC pads and discs RWD / AWD (obvious but a key difference...) No chassis bracing or strut bracing / front and rear strut bracing 0.9bar boost maximum (BPU minus the boost controller) / 1.3 - 1.4bar boost on the Evo Full Supra 1500kgs / 1300kgs for the EVO (again obvious but I think worth noting) Federal 595 RSR (rear wheels only) - Nexen N6000 (front wheels) on the Supra / Yokohama AD08R (front and rear) on the Eve The rest of the mods were fairly similar between the two. The Evo was running somewhere between 350 and 370bhp at its 1.3bar and I imagine the Supra was running similar at 0.9bar. The main issue I had all day was the front tyres. They were much better than I expected, but I had issues with braking late and understeer all day. By the time both I and the Evo had the feel for it, and were pushing at the end of the day, I had reached the limit of late braking and corner speed. So much so I had started accelerating earlier to make up for it, resulting in a few fun drift laps and one not so fun fishtailing exit from one corner! I am positive with sticky tyres on the front, the Supra had another second or more to give. I also have to say I was very pleased with the brakes. Again a pleasant surprise, only fading once we got to the afternoon runs and I started really pushing, even then, only after the lap itself was finished (having to slam on the brakes after the final straight from over 100mph). I did burn them out slightly, but nothing too bad. And the Endless pads I am very happy with, never used anything by Endless before, don't know their reputation, all I know is they are very popular in Japan from when I was living over there, so for the current setup, definitely worthy in my opinion. So with the front tyres identified as the primary upgrade, I thought why not get what I thought to be the primary upgrade installed today???? So today, I spent the day installing my shiny new HKS EVC6, one little hiccup being the car wouldn't start initially after the install.... turned out I wired the throttle signal to entirely the wrong ECU pinout... oops But now is running fine again. Only issue is I have some setup and tuning to complete... it peaked boost at around 1.5bar on the short run out! And I was watching the boost gauge and try to change up or let off before it went over 1.2... A job for tomorrow I guess... Cheers Dave

Guys and gals, Going to order my boost controller within today (hopefully). Been doing some research, but can't really decide from what I have read regarding differences between the latest GReddy profec and the HKS EVC 6. I like HKS stuff and the seemingly extra features seem like a good thing to have should I need them in the future (doubt I would need them so much at BPU level). However, is it worth the extra over the GReddy? From what i can tell, most people on other forums and here suggest the GReddy is simpler to use, but is this the only real difference I should consider? This is the only performance mod I plan on fitting for the next year (other than the UK brakes I brought back from Japan - logical....), so don't mind spending the extra on the HKS if its worth it. Like I say, I like HKS stuff and would rather have the EVC in my dash than the GReddy to be honest, but thats personal preference. Cheers Dave

Yes, I was shocked how badly split the pipe was to be honest. And just as amazed at how it didn't spray everywhere during the week and a half I was driving round (including 2 journeys north and south on the m1/m6 (a 370mile round trip). It was a rubber pipe, I have replaced it with a very similar rubber pipe, although i may look to upgrade all of these with some steel braided types soon. And the cost of the wasted fuel is a very valid concern! Super unleaded isn't so cheap these days

Thanks for the advice mate. Don't tell me there is another white supra around here.... -

Dave Carroll replied to Dave Carroll's topic in Supra Chat
Can't say I have seen it unfortunately. Only other supra I have seen in the 2.5 years I have lived down here is a white NA that rolled up next to mine on Friday afternoon at tescos... I commute to Cranfield near Milton Keynes every day fairly early and late, so probably why I've missed it. I can't stop going for a run at the moment... addicted to that 2JZ / Blitz Nur Spec combo, so no doubt if you are around this area at all you will see me on a cruise/blast. -

You are not too far at all. I'm just down the A45 to Wellingborough. Tiny little place called Strixton (you would probably be more familiar with the likes of Wollaston/Bozeat though - same area). -
From what I have heard, they don't have the best reputation, at least in their former trading name(s). I know my car was originally bought from them (9 years ago now) and I was told that the car did look great and as advertised. The only downside the buyer at the time found, was illegal tyres on closer inspection. Apparently it was the awful attempt to fob him off with part worn tyres and poor customer service post purchase that really annoyed the buyer at the time. This was 9 years ago though. However I do have to say, a car is a car and provided everything checks out on the car that should, and you are happy with what you see/hear/feel on the test drive then I would say no harm in having a look! They do have some nice looking cars...
