I have an African Grey parrott named Maverick. I have had him since a chick and he has been hand-reared. When we first got him he was really friendly, he would come out of his cage at every opportunity, sit on your shoulder, clean hubby’s teeth (disgusting!) and was a really lovely parrot that we loved dearly.
However, he is now the nastiest feathery bastard you will ever meet!!
Hubby and I are not completely sure why he suddenly turned, as it was a case of one day lovely and cute next night vicious sod. The only connection we can make is that a couple of days before his change a man had come into our house to do some tiling when we were not present. We can only assume that he shouted or maybe shock the cage because Maverick now does not want to come out his cage or socialize and if you try to get him out you have had it.
Just come back from a holiday and picked him up from my mums house neither hubby nor I dare transfer him from his travel cage to his normal one. Eventually he climbed out of his own will, but bit the f**k out of hubby’s hand when we needed to pick him up. Eventually he flew onto his big cage and I flicked him in with a duster, which really pissed him off and I am sure has made the matter worse.
It maybe that your bird has suffered some sort of trauma without you knowing it and is frightened. I have read that when a parrot bites you should not pull away fast but shove your finger further in. Hubby not willing to try this as yet.
I am no parrot expert (obviously), but would suggest you try not to appear scared but be firm. If you stop trying to coax him out he will only get worse – I appreciate this is easier said than done cause they are more than capable of taking the top of your finger off.
There are a couple of parrot website where experts are more than happy to give proper advice, I will find the links and post them on here for you and let me know what they say cause I will have to do the same for ours.
In the meantime good luck!
