garetheves
Heard this mentioned a few times. What exactly does it do? Why would someone do it? Are there any major risks etc with doing? Cheers for info
Nic
Heard this mentioned a few times. What exactly does it do? Why would someone do it? Are there any major risks etc with doing? Cheers for info The ECU adjusts the mapping a little based on the information it gets from the many sensors. It also stores any fault codes. Sometimes this can lead to poor running, warning lights on dash, etc. So if you feel the car is not running as well as it use to, or you have an unkown warning light on, then first thing to do would be to reset the ECU by disconnecting it from the battery for a few minutes. This will reset the ECU back to the factory default settings, the car may run a bit lumpy and not tickover properly at first, but if you do a 10 minute run it should 'learn' and adjust itself. It will also clear any stored fault codes, but these will come back if it senses a fault again.
Zed
Re-setting the ecu gets rid of any error codes that may be stored, some of which may be old and no longer be a problem, this in turn makes it easier to diagnose new faults thet may be present as thses codes will re-appear in the ecu. Secondly, from personal experience, I have found that the car accelerates much more cleanly and harder. Not sure why, but I think it is something to do with the way the car adapts to your driving style and adjusts the fuel maps accordingly and resetting returns to the base map from which the car can re-adjust. This is why it is a good thing to do after mods such as de-catting etc. As far as I know there are no risks associated with re-setting the ecu but someone else may know otherwise. I assume you know how to do this by the way, pulling the EFI fuse for about 30 secs. Hope this was of help.
Zed
Hi Nic, it seems we were writing our replies at about the same time but you submmitted yours just ahead of me. At least we seem to be saying the same sort of thing.

Terminator
I am pretty sure it is EFI 1 but I always pull 1 and 2 just to be sure. No harm can be done; it is a Toyota recommended proceedure to clear the ECU of codes when there is a problem, so that only recent faults show up.
