Project "Samco Sport & Hallman" - replaced old vacuum hoses & MBC

Getting sick and tired running at only 0.8bar of boost, so ordered the Hallman Pro RX manual boost controller kit and set it to run at "1.15bar firm" now. No fuel-cut so far... oh yesss! :) This super cool gadget comes pre-installed with ceramic ball (instead of heavier metal ball) and light spring (for finer boost tuning) with a separate heavy spring for higher boost application. Took the limited edition Gunmetal Grey unit to match the color of my Supra.

Also bought 2 packs of 4mm and 6mm Samco Sport silicone vacuum hoses (3m each pack) to replace most (if not all) of the old and hardened rubber hoses before it blows up during high boost operation.

Spent the whole day replacing the old rubber hoses, some are just so bloody hard to remove and need to splice then pry them off (as shown in the pixs)... WTF!

Took this opportunity to DIY fix the turbo pressure sensor as I spotted some sticky stuff surrounding the port. Cleaned it up thoroughly with WD40 and few sharp-end toothpicks, then dry off the lubricant before applying the windscreen silicone sealant to shield the PCB assembly. Tested it and seems to work fine... hopefully!

Also installed the Hallman MBC (according to the installation instructions supplied) using the bracket supplied (some modifications required in order to secure it on the shock mounting bolt) and set the boost to 1.15bar after few hot laps. The good news is, Hallman Pro RX MBC really hold the boost firm and no fuel-cut so far... thank God! :)

Questions:

Should I replace the rubber hoses on the vacuum canister as well? I assume 6mm silicone hoses will fit?

@Nic: no FCD being installed and it's a Defi digital boost gauge mate. :) could it be UK-spec only fuel-cut at 1.2bar? oh boy... now i'm worried... :(

I'm not as familiar with the UK spec Supra but I *think* the fuel cut is also at 1.0bar, someone else may be able to confirm.

*ahemm* this Hallman Pro RX kit is not a conventional bleed valve actually... it's using ceramic ball + light spring design, so not venting the excess air to atmosphere unlike typical bleed valve.

check this out...

and this one too, MBC vs EBC on a STi...

btw, i believe most electronic boost controllers are basically using the same ball-n-spring design concept + electronic control for auto climate compensation + scramble mode.

  • 2 months later...

The MBC isn't too bad - you don't get the "gain" feature that seems like such good fun on an EBC and its is difficult to manage it however they do fine until such time that an EBC can be purchased. Its only the bleed valve type that is a complete waste of time.

It sounds to me like you have a FCD installed (previous owner?) ....suprised its not kicking in at 1 bar!!
