far
Is it one of the Huawei (whatever) things? AFAIK they are supported on Linux, but it's really a case of whether the support has been compiled into the kernel or compiled/provided as modules. Does the eeePc say they're supported? I've been thinking about getting one of these for the kids, but I was waiting for the 4 or 8gb one, and I'd like the larger screen which Asus say isn't going to happen Apparantly they are supported as a number of users are running the 3g usbs on them. I have got a black 4gb EEE. Its pretty sweet and great for carrying around with you everywhere!

Ah excellent - I was searching for Linux USB compatibility (Which is what I thought my system was), I know realise that its actually a variant of Linux...should help with the search results! carl0s
Linux is just the kernel.. the centre of things. Everything else is put together on top to make a 'distribution', i.e. the graphical interface, how it's customised, how you configure things, what's included, etc. It's all somewhat specific to the distribution. Linspire is just another Linux distribution, however this isn't regular run-on-your-pc-Linspire, but I read that Asus had just customised Linspire rather than creating their own distribution from scratch. carl0s
Anyhoo, the Huawii (whatever) E220 things like what Vodafone give out (and T Mobile from what I just read) are supposed to be supported out of the box according to http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=824 It's just like any other modem though, you'd probably need to configure a dial-up connection using whatever front-end is provided (kPPP ? kDial? fsckknows), username "web/web" or whatever your operator requires. carl0s
Ooops, my mistake. It's Xandros (the other dummies-Linux distribution) that it uses, not Linspire. Sorry
far
whoohoo! Finally got it working after much consultation from the EEE pc forum and help on here. Thorin
Just read about those EEE PC things, they sound quite good.
far
Just read about those EEE PC things, they sound quite good. yes its pretty cool and weighs nothing, I thought about going down the route of XDA/ Nokia communicator but they are just too big to carry around as phones. This was perfect and has a decent keyboard+ you can load XP on it too if you want. I am quite happy with the Xandros os - it allows me to get online and check emails. Combined with the 3G card (£15 per month 3gb allowance) its a pretty good package. They are only £220 too!
JustGav
Why not just format the EEEPC with a nlite'd version of Windows XP and then you would be able to use it a bit easier...

Yes I was thinking I would do that without a doubt when I ordered the EEE but when it arrived I didnt mind the linux platform too much and it did everything I needed it to do. Today the problem has been down to the OS but I dont see this happening again. Also I was a bit scared of fecking with the os not knowing exactly what I was doing:Pling:
