TLicense
We currently get a discounted deal with Medion, which is quite a good thing as my laptop could pretty much be described as being steam powered! (IBM thinkpad 600) In fact it's so weedly, that even the snow flakes have pretty much brought it to a standstill. So has anyone had much experience of them? Are they any good? The one I'm looking at is the MD95278. The specs are:- Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor with 3.2GHz 15" TFT XGA Colour Display 512MB DDR-RAM 80GB hard disk DVD-Writer (DVD+/-R, DVD+/-RW, DVD+R DL, CD-RW/-R, DVD-ROM) SiS M661FX shared memory graphics 16 bit Soundchip 56K V.90 Modem 10/100 Mbit Fast Ethernet LAN port 2 integrated loudspeakers Wireless LAN 802.11g up to 54Mbit/s 1x PCMCIA type II 6 x USB 2.0 1 x LAN (RJ45) 1 x Modem (RJ11) 1 x VGA out 1 x TV out 1 x Audio out 1 x Microphone in I can get this for about £240 (Christmas present from my parents probably) So what do you recon? Muffleman
I bought a Medion laptop from woolworths a while ago, it has been faultless ! I was well surprised. And at £240 mate, can you lose ? I've only just changed because I got a good deal on a Dell ATG, but I'm typing away on the Medion right now
MrRalphMan
Not a terrible spec, what's the screen resolution?

I've only just changed because I got a good deal on a Dell ATG, but I'm typing away on the Medion right now Whereas, I bought a Medion laptop and threw it away in 6 months. I found it awkward, slow and generally a waste of beer tokens. Then I tried claiming on the warranty and it all went to shit. I'm still in discussions with them but don't hold any hope. Then I bought an Alienware laptop and started out on a rollercoaster of emotions ranging from pissed off to livid. I'm currently using a Toshiba one and I rate the IBM ones highly. £240... depends what you are using it for and what features you're after. If it's just searching the 'net and videos etc it should be OK. Good for mapping too! I don't think I'd be tempted to buy something like this at £240 simply because of my past experience. Scott
You can get a FAR better laptop for that money IMO. That spec is a couple of years old. My lappy is 3 years old with a higher spec. You can get modern laptops with modern processors and a LOT more ram for the same money. Scott =op
Muffleman
No onboard serial Nope. I've been lucky though, bought a cheap usb to serial and it's been okay. Still, not a problem now with my spanky new Dell

Scott
Makro is selling one for £220+VAT. Looks like a cracker. If you want to part with the extra dough there is an absolute stormer for £300 plus vat. Both toshiba i think. Also a couple of good deals at PCWorld. Don't particularly like PCWorld but can't argue with some of the offers they have just now. Scott =op
Steve
I need to buy a new laptop, but all the new machines have bloody Vista on them. The few i have found with XP normally work out about £200 more
michael
£240 / Gift from parents makes it a decent enough buy, you'll certainly feel likes it's an upgrade anyway Could do with another 512mb of RAM (cheap enough) and the CPU is a little bit thirsty for a laptop so I suspect battery life won't be great but other than that it should be capable enough. TLicense
Well it doesn't have to come from there. Just as we get the deal it was the first place I looked at. They have actually offered to spend almost double that, but I don't want them wasting good money. So for £400, what's the best laptop I could get? I would use it for wireless surfing, MS office stuff, and of course mapping with the AEM so needs either serial (preferable) or PCMCIA slot. If it can handle a game like battlefield then all the better.
Scott
£400 will get you a really good lappy. Check Dell, if i was buying one thats where i would go. Scott =op
DamanC
Personally for £240 you cant go wrong. It will do what you want it too. As its been mentioned an extra 512mb ram will do you proud. Dont touch a Dell, ever!
Scott
Why not? I've not had a Dell but they look the best value for money. Scott =op
DamanC
About as reliable as Ed's mum. They are up there with packard bell on the sh1t list. Half of generic upgrades do not fit or are incompatable. As for the servers, dont get me started (£800 for a gig of RAM, 3 months ago!)
Scott
We have a Dell PC in the work for use on a CMM machine. Had it in there for 8 years and it hasn't skipped a beat. Know what you mean about overcharging for individual bits though. Shouldn't be an issue with a bog standard laptop though. Scott =op

AndrewOW
Erm where are you getting that from? Direct quote "Includes VAT & Shipping" Scott =op It was built directly from the Dell website. The shipping charge is added on when you go to 'your basket'. Even though there is a £30 off special at the moment its still a rip off. I even phoned them to find out why they charged that amount, to be told that "its still a cheaper deal than PC World". PC World don't sell Dell, do they?! Do you have to be a member or trader to go to Makro etc?
Scott
U must have bought one that didn't include shipping in the price though. As i already said, it says next to the laptops i was looking at, around the £300-£450 mark, that shipping and VAT is included in the price. Oh and you need a card for Makro but i'm pretty sure you don't need to be a trader. I'm not afterall Scott =op

As i already said, it says next to the laptops i was looking at, around the £300-£450 mark, that shipping and VAT is included in the price. Go to the Dell website and build a budget laptop (ie. Inspiron 1520), which supposedly 'includes VAT and Shipping', then go to 'your basket', and you'll see that 'VAT and Shipping' is added even though it states its been included earlier on. No such thing as free shipping from Dell. I did phone them to ask why, and spoke to a tosspot that wouldn't budge on the shipping price.
Muffleman
Yeah but Dell do 'deals' toward the end of their sales quarters, quite often dropping the delivery charge and throwing more memory in. Now is not the time to get a deal as they are in the run up to xmas.
Scott
Advertised price £449 including vat and delivery Basket invoice price Sub Total £331.07 + 17.5% VAT = £389.01 Delivery £51.06 + 17.5% VAT = £60 Total Price £382.13 + 17.5% VAT = £449 Which is exactly what i have been saying from the very beginning. If it says it INCLUDES delivery, i didn't say delivery was free, i just stated that the price included delivery and VAT. Scott =op
