grahamc
I have read this wrong? Is there a difference between the 2? Considering a nice big LCD as a christmas pressie for myself
JustGav
Yup, i = interlaced (takes 2 frames to do an image) p = progressive...(takes 1 frame) p is better and usually a higher spec.

grahamc
is the "p" worth the additional money? or is "i" decent?
Snooze
Depends. To be honest, 1080p will only really make a big difference on a really large TV or if you're intending to use the TV with a PC or similar. Most console games won't be 1080p for a long time yet. Sky HD is only 1080i, terrestrial HD (if it ever appears) almost definitely won't be 1080p. 1080p is good for PC usage and for HD/BluRay films - and for the films, it's probably only worth the extra money on a huge telly. Scott
PS3 is 1080P is it not? If your going to spend the money on a good TV, might as well make it the best Scott =op

Alex
PS3 will do 1080p if the source ie material it's playing is 1080p 1080p = 2million pixels = 1920pixels wide by 1080 high 1080i = 1million pixels = (can't remember the resolution). 1080p = the highest def until 1440 arrives. 1080p = the resolution needed to run a PC off of the telly (HTPC) 1080p = The highest rated material available via HD-DVD and BlueRay. 1080i = Sky HD 476i = ~450,000 pixels = Standard Definition. 720p = 1 million pixels too. 1080i isn't a major upgrade.... 720p = all you need for watching TV... 1080p = 95% future proofed and capable of displaying the finest details that HiDef can currently offer....yet the downside is the scaling. 1080p has to take SD images and turn them into 1080p ones (your TV produces a 1080p image no matter what the source)..if there isn't alot of information ie only 450,000 out of the 2million required pixels the 1080p TV has to quite literally guess how best to fill in the blanks! 720p has to upscale too, but not to the same level....it's only 2:1 instead of 4:1. 1080p = 4:1 pixel guessing (crap 1080p tv's look blocky and rubbish when displaying SD TV. 720p/1080i = 2:1 pixel guessing much easier to do so invariably 720p's look better when watching normal TV.... HTH.
Snooze
Oh - the PS3 will happily output 1080p, and games CAN be written to run in 1080p..... but the machine doesn't really have the raw processing power to make a decent game in 1080p and as most of the world doesn't have 1080p, the developers are expecting to use the consoles power to make gameplay (eg. physics engines, artificial intelligence, etc.) better rather than to make 1080p output instead of 1080i (or 720p) output. The list of PS3 games currently supporting 1080p is a little short: http://www.makeyougohmm.com/ps3-1080p-games/ The list of 1080p games for the 360 is slightly longer: http://www.makeyougohmm.com/xbox360-1080p-games/ But still not really enough to justify spending the extra money on a TV to most people. Cable
1080p much better in the long run and they aren't that badly priced. Blu Ray looks fantastic also
Daston
This is true I got 1080p as it is full HD where as HD ready TV's are a bit hit and miss after reading all the blurb
