Ric
goto the device manager to see if the sound card is still installed, and if there are any yellow exclamation marks around, it probably just needs the driver reinstalling

Gamer
Go to the manufacturer's website of the laptop that you have and download the sound drivers for your laptop. If you need some help then just let me know the make and model number and I will locate the download for you.
marbleapple
Could you not just do a system restore to yesterday? That should fix it
Pabs
if no sound card appears in device manager, right click on the computer right at the top of the list, and select "scan for hardware changes". This should detect the soundcard, and if the driver is still present on the machine it'll install it. If not, it'll prompt you to download one from windows update. If there isn't one there, then at least you'll have a make/model of card listed in device manager for you to go to their website and download the right one. Gamer
Having the make and model number from the device manager and proceeding to download the sound drivers on their own from the sound card manufacturers website might not be the easiest course of action as most laptops have drivers that are specifically for that laptop/manufacturer in question. As I said, the easiest would be to go to the laptop manufacturers website and go to the download section that corresponds to the laptop in question and proceed to download them from there. This way there is no question about compatibility and the install should be easy peasy.
