My first Supra...woohoo!

Hey guys (and gals)

I live in New Zealand and came across your website by pure luck, I've poured over the PDF's in the FAQ section and found them most helpful! I've bought myself a 1993 Supra RZ which is my (modest) dream car. It's all stock and I've found myself wanting to boost the performance a little...Now I've read removing the catalytic converter will boost performance. I've found a high flow resonator on the internet to buy, would this help or cause any issues if installed?

Any help/info for a Supra N00b would be much appreciated!

Simo

sorry, not quite following you. What do you mean by a regular decat pipe? I just need to know what to look out for on the market.

oh and thanks guys for welcoming me, I'm stoked to be part of the best car club!

Hey Simo

Check out the faq regarding BPU. Thats what you want to do. Also, read up on the same thing on http://www.mkiv.com or supraforums.com, but bear in mind that there is differences between the Japanees spec version of the MKIV and the Export (EU/US) version. I'm guessing yours are j-spec, so go for what it says on this forum (since there is A LOT of j-spec imports in UK due to the right-hand drive. guessing same situation in NZ).

Another thing, check out your local club: http://www.mkiv.co.nz/, lots of info here as well

Welcome to the club matey. If you want a good decat pipe, 1st or 2nd, any of the traders on here will be able to help you out. Nic (import pimp), envy, whifbitz, chris wilson etc.:) The decat will realsese a few more bhp but it all depends on how much you want. If you have a bit of cash to spend and want a very good cash to power ratio than as previously said check out the BPU explination.:)

The product you have linked to is just as generic silencer/muffler for a 3 inch system. I am not sure if it would fit. If it did it would only yield a small power gain. The most restrictive cat is the first one. Over here we either have two pipes with no silencer to replace both cats or just one. JDM cars will hit fuel cut so a metal plate with a hole in it( restrict or ring) to stop the boost creeping above 1.1-1.2 bar.

I am sure the MKIV guys in NZ will help you http://mkiv.supras.org.nz/links.htm

cool, thanks for your help guys, I'm in touch with a guy here in town to see what he can do to help. One last question, if you decat, install a restrictor plate, do you need what is called a 'boost controller'?

Well, depends on how restrictive tyour restrictor is and what kind of boost you wish for.

Some people fit a ring that restricts to 1,0 bar and then ad a boost controller to electronically boost to fx 1,2 bar when needed. This is a good thing since you wont push the turbos too much unles you really have to. A general opinion is that you shouldn't let them push more than 1,2 bar. The higher to boost the more the wear of cause.

You can also just fit a ring that restricts to 1,2 bar (around 50mm in diameter), but this way isn't as "safe" as using the boost controller since the RR allows for what is know as boost spikes (not too good and usually doe to temperature changes and so) and the boost controller is much better at holding boost at a constant level.

But again, if you drive sensibly and don't do constant 180mph stretches on the autobahn and in general dont hit max boost all the time i'm guessing that 1,2 bar RR is not going to hurt anything.

Another way in stead of the RR is just the knock a hole through the first cat (if you still got it) of the same size, that way you dont have to fit decat pipes and cut up the exhaust too much. same result as the RR.
