jaymdee
I'm being offered the option of getting a car from work as an 'Essential User' vehicle because I do over 12,000 business miles a year. Because this is not a promotion, I can't get a really good car, but the list has: Ford Fiesta (inc ST, 1.6tdci) Ford Focus (not inc ST) VW Polo (inc GTI & Sport tdi100) Volvo C30 1.6 S coupe Volvo S40 1.6 S saloon If I get a diesel I'll save money over petrol, but I'd rather the either the Fiesta ST or Polo GTI. I could get a nicely spec'd Volvo (leather SatNav etc), but they're only 1.6. Lets have a poll to see what you lot think. Something to consider is that if I do get promoted, I may still have to keep this car for a few years. J
Ian W
Fiesta ST for me EDIT: actually i'd go for the TDCI Zetec S but you say you prefer petrol so if i wanted a petrol i'd go for the ST. ok? ok.
edge
The C30 looks quite funky but thats all i know
razza
why not take the cash option instead, if they offer it...
R Black
I take it your keeping the Supra, so i'd go C30.
jaymdee
why not take the cash option instead, if they offer it... No cash option I'm afraid. It's a car for work to save on hassle and cost of hire cars. A further consideration is that a diesel would allow me to actually save about £1200 a year to spend on the Supra and Integrale. The Polo GTI and Fiesta ST wouldn't, but they'd be more fun I take it your keeping the Supra, so i'd go C30. TBH, I quite like the idea of the C30 or S40. Yes, I'm keeping Supra and most likely the Integrale aswell, although being a 3 car family would be a bit excessive. . . . . especially as I'm the only member
Homer
Out of those I'd go for the S40. Very well built and a nice comfy cruiser. Ford
Ian W
Ford you've driven the fiesta then? Had one as a hire car and actually loved it
michael
The Fiesta TDCi is perky but the seats on the one I had were awful, you sat on them and clung onto the wheel to stop yourself falling over when enjoying the handling. ST is nicely put together but the engine is a little lacking and you always feel like you want more from it. I'd probably go for the C30 because you don't see 100's each day (probably because of the Marmite styling), no idea how well they drive though. Is that it for choices? No Suzuki Swift or a Punto Sporting (Arbarth?) for example? You could get both in pretty high spec for the price of a base Fiesta.
R Black
The Polo GTI and Fiesta ST wouldn't, but they'd be more fun Lets see you have Supra and an intergrale(both FUN) but you think the Gti/ST would be fun, and on workdays in traffic etc

Homer
you've driven the fiesta then? Had one as a hire car and actually loved it Yeah, had one as a hire car a few months back. I thought it was aweful, it only had 500 miles on it and 3 bits of trim had already fallen off!
Scott
TDCI Focus all the way. My Dad has a 1.8 petrol focus and the only thing it lacks is some guts. The low down torque of the oil burner would easily make up for the petrol's shortcomings. The handling of the thing is absolutely unreal. Feedback, stability, handling, brakes, gearbox are the high points of the cars. I'm yet to find a low point unless you count the blue oval on the front lol. Scott
Oh, what about the Fabia VRS? Its fun even though its an oil burner. Little chip gets you 170bhp with a switch to turn it back to normal (£500) Great little cars even though they are a "poor mans volkswagon". jaymdee
Cheers guys. I agree - I don't need another performance/fun car on top of the 2 I've already got. Therefore I'm tending towards a fully spec'd Volvo (not sure which one) even if it's only a 1.6, driving 600 miles a week on the motorway it should be fine. (Yes - that IS the list. The full company car list has the new BMW 335i coupe, Z4M, SLK350, Audi S4 etc on it, but I'm not at that grade - yet )
The Restorer
I would have gone for the C30 but that back end really puts me off. I chose the S40.
