Thorin
Anyone running it successfully with the NVidia restricted drivers? It's not working for me, I get a black screen, even tried building the current drivers manually from the NVidia site (same version as the ones in Gutsy) but still the same. About to try with the beta drivers but it's doing my head in.
carl0s
I'm ATI, sorry. I installed the most recent RC on my laptop (ATI FireGL v3200), about a week prior to the final release and it worked reasonably well, except that installing the restricted drivers killed compositing, until I manually changed to Xgl. Actually, Xgl was pretty neat - I had moving videos wobbling around the screen whist the video was playing properly. With fglrx (ATI's proprietry/restriced driver), the video wasn't so neat. I got pissed off and decided to "come back next year" (again!) when PPTP wouldn't stay connected for more than 30 seconds, hibernate/resume didn't work right (no doubt Xgl related..) and Evolution was still rubbish with Exchange To be fair, the way forward is probably to dump Exchange in favour of whatever HP Openmail has most recently been rebranded as, but I like Exchange ActiveSync a lot. Thorin
Yeah I'm missing my compositing effects I seem to remember reading of issues with PPTP with the release candidates, might be ok with the final but I don't use it. Hibernate seemed to work ok when I did it by accident yesterday... but evolution/exchange is still a bit crap. Well it actually seems quite a bit better with this version, I used to fairly frequently have to restart Evolution and the exchange backend process, touch wood I haven't done that so far... Still slow doing contact lookups and shared calendar seems a bit iffy still. I'd still much rather put up with that than use Windows though. Haven't had chance to try the beta driver yet but from doing some reading I believe that should fix it. I'm using a GeForce FX based card so not your average home PC graphics card and it seems support is a bit buggy in the current stable release. They've also broken ncpmount netware tools but I think I can fix that. Other than that I'm impressed with this release... well I will be once I get compositing working again.
