mr lover
Just agreed a price for a car, Peugeot 306 for my daughter, started a hpi check and with just the registration no. its telling me the car is a mercedes Is it stolen ? does have a private plate on. Just left the guy a message to ring me back since I have found this out. I haven't seen the car yet was going to his address to view and if ok buy it tomorrow morning. michael
I had this with the Supra, the garage forgot to tell me that the plates on the car at the time had been taken off and put onto a Range Rover. Could be innocent enough.
dazla
Mmm dont know about that one. Maybe the plate is still on retention from another car but he's put the plate on the Peugeot before he's aloud to.
marbleapple
If it is dodgy and you still buy it then you are liable to have the car taken back off you should the Police find out. Had you found out afterwards then that would be a different matter. Could be an innocent enough excuse but if in doubt leave it alone.

edge
My dad once had problems selling a car a few years ago now. The guy came and looked and wanted to buy. he done a hpi and gave odd results. it was that when the plates got re done at one point they was one digit out on the front plate. Have you done a check on the VIN ?

DaveK
just spoken to him and the plate has been on the car for at least 2 years, he bought the 14 months ago he has the v5 document etc, strange I nearly bought a 4x4 from a dealer a few years ago. He had the V5 as well - but when I did an HPI check, it turned out the car had been stolen about 2 years ago. The dealer wasn't happy - he'd got it from an auction house. DaveK
I think that even if you can trust DVLA - and even if HPI get confirmation from DVLA - it sounds like this could be a lot of hassle you don't need. 306s are hardly rare. I'd buy a different one.
