Track day auto boxes for 520+bhp?

Justin

Recommended Posts

Is there anything suitable I can use?

I just did a track day and, whilst having great speed, traction and good cornering could only attack the track for 1.5 laps each time. Going through 2, D and O/D on/off took my transmission temps up to 150c plus. Not good.

The 1.5 laps were great and I could keep up with the Porsches, Ferrari and Viper that was there but I want to be going round for more than 1.5 laps for a £200 track day!

I need to keep this amount of power so moving to a stock manual box alone won't sort this problem out.

I'm going to get in touch with Chris Wilson soon to see what he suggests I/he do to my car to give it more stamina on the track.

Any tips (no I don't want to strip all the Tescos trim out to reduce weight)

Cheers

Justin

justin, i'd fit a few more coolers, i've got 2 large ones, 1 spal fan and the stock cooler under the rad. I'd rip the air con rad out and get a huge GM tranny cooler with a fan, the fit two under the passenger headlight.

Can a stock manual box handle 520+bhp?

With ease, and more.

Sounds like a good idea.

Sounds like a good compromise. Very tempted to go 6speed manual though just can't afford that plus an uprated clutch at the mo.

I've got cooler space issues though. Under the passenger headlight is my engine oil cooler and under the driver headlight is my blitz SUS and derale tranny cooler. Ditching the AC rad sounds like a goodun.

Cheers for the input all.

Another thing you can do on top of a cooler is get the sump pan size increased. Its pretty small as standard, you coould add another 2L of fliud which would no doubt help! I believe the pan from the l400 or soarer v8 auto might do the trick. I'm getting the part number soon, Ill let you know when I do.

You might regret the loss of A/C on a hot day!

I had the same probs with a/t temps at the ring earlier in the year. I had the power down to lowest but it still overheated by 1/2 way round...bloody annoying as the car was handling well! I changed the fluid when I got back as it had turned quite dark!

Ah nice one Rob yes bigger sump too thanks mate I'll add that to my options shortlist.

Blimey I thought I was miffed at going to Bedford to find out the box was too hot. Real bummer to get all the way to Germany then find out!

I have the answer to your problems, maybe? E-mail me.

If you have a decent water rad installation (ie, you haven't binned the stock ducting to "fit" a FMIC) you can run an oil to water heat exchanger for the auto box, and thus not have to worry about placing another cooler in the air stream. i use and favour Laminova ones. I have a nice one here, used and for sale. More suited for ENGINE oil cooling, probably a bit big for the auto box. You can get smaller ones, search on Laminova, I can supply at discounted prices.

I was thinking about saying goodbye to the drag racing scene. I wasn't going to do any more mods on that score anyway. Now Chris Wilson has told me it would be an idea to lose the 3800 Hi Stall Torque Converter to get back the 50 degrees plus celcius I need for the auto box to do track days.

:bye: Very emotional to say goodbye to 11.6 1/4 miles but I need to progress and waiting around at Santa Pod for 6 hours to get one run in to then to always be beaten predicatably by the high end jap drag racers ain't that much fun to be honest.

Roaring past Porches and Ferraris on a track is much fun plus learning better driving skills is progress. Still thinking about manual conversion but I'll need a new ECU, flywheel and clutch as well as the second hand un-guaranteed manual box and bits.

Why would you need a new ECU?

I thought when people changed to a six speed they fitted a resitor or something. I cant remember exactly. May be worth asking Jezz as he does the conversions.

That would be a nice solution. I have a mapped Blitz Access ECU so just swapping it with a stock manual ECU won't do.

If you wanna do track work and are losing the 'drag edge' to your car Justin you're much better off converting to 6-speed. You can buy em brand new for a reasonable amount (looks like £2.5k delivered) through mvpmotorsports.com if you want warranty :eyebrows:

The other bits for the conversion can then be bought from breakers etc.

Cheers,

Brian.

Well, you could aim for setting some 6-sp records at the strip as well. I don't see a well driven 6-sp running DR's being that far behind a hi stall'd auto :eyebrows:

Nah, I've made up my mind. Lose the hi stall and buy some UK brakes on the rear for track days. I'll wait to see how the other boys get on with their £3K manual conversions and if all goes well will join em later. Will be very sad to not drag any more though. I'll do one last one at Pod on Jap Show I think.
