BOB B Posted July 18, 2007 Share Posted July 18, 2007 Hi Everyone. Got a "clunking" just wondered if anyone has had experiance or has got some helpfull advice. I have already looked through all the clunking posts and I have come across the same thing a few times but with no conclusions. It comes from the rear offside and clunks every time on initial braking, (only checked it in a forwards motion so far), it sounds like the pad is moving in the caliper and nocking against the side of the caliper. I have changed the rear discs two weeks ago but I have only had the car 6 weeks and I have had little chance to have the window down so I dont know if it was there previously. I have had the wheel off a couple of times and checked it out and compaied it with the other brakes, al seams fine and the same. The brakes are UK not that it should make any defferance. Homer Posted July 20, 2007 Share Posted July 20, 2007 Assuming the noise did not occur before the disc change I'd say it's caused by the pads. When you change your discs you should change the pads too. If you didn't the pads have likely set themselves up to a very worn disc (where the face end is wearing faster than the rear). You must change you pads when swapping out worn discs {applies to jspec brakes only: Also ensure that the sliding calliper is working correctly and not sticking as this is a common fault. It can lead to one edge or one pad getting significantly more worn than others. } If they're old pads the clonking will more than likely come from the pad 'rocking' on the piston when the brake is applied. BOB B Posted July 21, 2007 Author Share Posted July 21, 2007 Thanks Homer, no I didnt change the pads with the disc change and the old discs were very very badly worn, though the pads dont look too old, but that could be a big factor pad wear. So Ill get some rear pads, I shouldnt have to change the front as well for balance or anything should I ? because everything at the front is fine. Scooter Posted July 21, 2007 Share Posted July 21, 2007 are you talking of the split pins at the end of each pin (inboard) ? i'm talking of the metal piece that goes over the top of the pad/disk/pad opening on the caliper which the pins slot through, one over one under? apologies if you have these too or thats what you meant!
